Cooking 101 | Satisfying meal takes raw ingredients beyond green ...

No need to use the stove for this meal from Johnson County Community College student chef Jacki Johnson.

It?s all raw and gluten-free, to boot.Johnson is a raw food enthusiast whose interest in the movement was sparked when her mother had open heart surgery in Cleveland. In the waiting room, Johnson read numerous articles about raw food and its benefits. When she returned home, she went to the library, read more about the trend and was so intrigued by it that she became a certified raw chef. The pretend pasta would work for either dinner or lunch, Johnson said. She serves it to her family, although she doesn?t usually dye the pasta because her kids aren?t fond of beet juice. Her tips for the recipes:??The nutritional yeast replaces Parmesan cheese in the pesto. The man-made product imparts a cheesy flavor as well as B vitamins and protein to the pesto.??The ground flaxseeds and hemp seeds for the crackers can be found in most natural food markets.??Be sure to soak the walnuts used in the crackers in water; walnuts contain an enzyme inhibitor, and one of the key reasons for eating raw is to preserve foods? enzymes.??The crackers are a great accompaniment to soup or hummus as well as the pasta dish.

Shellie Pfohl Makes Announcement About Updates to President's ...

When we held our inaugural Nutrition + Physical Activity Learning Connection Summit this past September in Washington, DC, the GENYOUth team and our partners had several important goals, which included bringing the science behind the Learning Connection (the powerful connection learning and physical activity have to a student?s performance) to the forefront, and highlighting some of the important work Summit participants are doing to support student health.
?
When Shellie Pfohl, Executive Director of the President?s Council on Fitness and Nutrition, introduced Sam Kass, Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives at the White House, she also shared some exciting news coming directly out of the White House and Let?s Move! that has the potential to reframe the way a children?s health is viewed while they are in school and through their development long-term.
?
For the first time in 25 years, the President?s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) will make major changes to the Youth Fitness test that change the priority of the test from measuring students? overall performance to measuring their ambitions and self-perceived abilities. The First Lady herself said that the test will be ?based on what they (kids) can do and what their own goal is.? She added that ?this is important because we want physical activity to be a lifelong habit.?
?
The three main components of the new program will be 1. Assessment, 2. Professional Development, and 3. Recognition and awards, replacing the Youth Fitness test with Fitnessgram, a more robust program that provides kids and families with tools and information to create and sustain healthy habits.
?
Fitnessgram? assesses cardiovascular fitness, body composition, muscle strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. Fitnessgram? is currently used in 67,000 schools in all 50 states.
?
The GENYOUth team is thrilled to be collaborating with programs like the President?s Council Youth Fitness Program as they continuously seek out ways to empower kids and their families to take an active role in personal health. By allowing a child to set personal health goals, rather than holding to a standard that may not be realistic, they are putting trust in the student to make smart decisions and pay their learning forward to their peers. A big thank you to Shellie Pfohl and the President?s Council for making this announcement at the Learning Connection Summit, and for the substantial efforts that they are making to nurture child health.

Science-backed TopFloor raises $6m from Google Ventures, others for social shopping play

Los Angeles-based incubator Science is at it again, having launched a brand new company called TopFloor designed to change the way we shop online. Founders Brian Lee and Mike Jones head this new startup and hope to answer a question they frequently get asked by celebrities and business: ?Why do we invest time and money into building social audiences that we ultimately can?t leverage for sales??

TopFloor is a video-driven platform where anyone can engage with on their social network. Think of it like a rebooted version of QVC for the social web. The company works with brands to put together videos about their products and includes annotations that, when clicked, link the viewer to a page where they can purchase that particular item. Videos are produced by TopFloor with the help of its video production team and takes about 3-4 days to complete, although if the brands know what they want to do, something could be turned around pretty quickly.

topfloor screenshot02 520x466 Science backed TopFloor raises $6m from Google Ventures, others for social shopping play

What makes TopFloor unique in this field is that it is one of the few YouTube partners who have the ability to add links into videos. It?s building a platform that will deliver what it calls an ?integrated and seamless shopping experience within popular shopping networks ? not simply another standalone destination shopping site.? While primarily shared on YouTube, these videos can be inserted into tweets as rich objects that enable users to watch and shop directly from their feed.

The company will manage the entire process from start to finish, including uploading the video into its YouTube channel. Future discussions included having embeddable players for interested parties to use.

Jones says that this new service will change the way social and commerce interact with one another:

To date, experiments typically haven?t fared well because most have been little more than traditional e-commerce tactics shoehorned into social platforms. Affiliate links and Web stores built in Facebook application tabs are just two examples.

Unbeknownst to the general public, TopFloor had already been running for the past few months and in early tests, it saw sales conversions that were more than 10x higher on social channels than by email ?with more than 1,300 units sold in 3 hours. These results, combined with research by Booz & Co. predicting the social commerce industry will top $14 billion by 2015, illustrate that consumers are heavily interested in finding new ways to shop and share with their friends and network.

With TopFloor, customers can easily find out where to go to purchase the product being discussed while they have an interest in it.

The company has raised $6 million for their Series A round to help enable commerce across any social network. Investors include Polaris Ventures, Google Ventures, Crosslink Ventures, Rustic Canyon Partners, and, of course, Science Media. It has a revenue-share monetization model that will be dependent on whether its fulfillment services are needed.

Historic mosque in Syria's ancient city of Aleppo is burned; Assad orders repairs

BEIRUT - A landmark mosque in Aleppo was burned, scarred by bullets and trashed ? the latest casualty of Syria's civil war ? and President Bashar Assad on Monday ordered immediate repairs to try to stem Muslim outrage at the desecration of the 12th century site.

The Umayyad Mosque suffered extensive damage, as has the nearby medieval covered market, or souk, which was gutted by a fire that was sparked by fighting two weeks ago. The market and the mosque are centerpieces of Aleppo's walled Old City, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Government troops had been holed up in the mosque for months before rebels launched a push this week to drive them out. Activists and Syrian government officials blamed each other for the weekend fire at the mosque.

Rebel supporters also alleged that regime forces defaced the shrine with offensive graffiti and drank alcohol inside, charges bound to further raise religious tensions in Syria. Many of the rebels are Sunni Muslims, while the regime is dominated by Alawites, or followers of an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

"It's all blackened now," activist Mohammad al-Hassan said of the site, also known as the Great Mosque. One of Syria's oldest and largest shrines, it was built around a vast courtyard and enclosed in a compound adjacent to the ancient citadel.

Al-Hassan said the army had been using the mosque as a base because of its strategic location in the Old City and he blamed Assad for the destruction.

"He burns down the country and its heritage, and then he says he will rebuild it. Why do you destroy it to begin with?" al-Hassan said in a telephone interview from Aleppo.

Fighting has destroyed large parts of Aleppo, Syria's largest city with 3 million residents and its former business capital. Activists say more than 33,000 people have died in the conflict, which began in March 2011 and has turned into a civil war.

Five of Syria's six World Heritage sites have been damaged in the fighting, according to UNESCO, the U.N.'s cultural agency. Looters have broken into one of the world's best-preserved Crusader castles, Crac des Chevaliers, and ruins in the ancient city of Palmyra have been damaged.

Both rebels and regime forces have turned some of Syria's significant historic sites into bases, including citadels and Turkish bath houses, while thieves have stolen artifacts from museums.

Karim Hendili, a Paris-based UNESCO expert who oversees heritage sites in the Arab world, said Aleppo's Old City has been hardest hit. The fire that swept through the souk burned more than 500 shops in the narrow, vaulted passageways, destroying a testament to its flourishing commercial history.

"After the loss of the souk, there is now major damage of the mosque," Hendili said.

The "soul of the city" is really being damaged, he added, "and this is difficult to repair."

Video posted online by activists show a large fire and black smoke raging in the mosque Saturday, and there also are shots of its blackened, pockmarked walls. Debris is strewn on the floors where worshippers once prayed on green and gold carpets.

The videos are consistent with AP's reporting of the incident.

"Assad's thugs set the mosque on fire as a punishment for being defeated by the Free Syrian Army," the caption on one video read.

In another video, a rebel inside the mosque holds up a torn copy of the Muslim holy book, saying: "These are our Qurans. This is our religion, our history."

The rebel in the video also held up an empty bottle, saying it had contained alcohol.

The Syrian government said it pushed back rebels out of the mosque after the weekend fighting, although activists gave conflicting reports on who controls it.

Rami Martini, chief of Aleppo's Chamber of Tourism, blamed rebels for targeting the city's monuments and archaeological treasures. He said the losses were impossible to estimate because of the fighting in the area, but added it could be the most serious damage since an earthquake in 1830s struck the mosque.

Despite the fire, the structure of the mosque appeared to be intact, although a gate that leads to the ancient market was burned, said Martini, who is specialized in repairing archaeological sites and monuments.

The platform inside the mosque, or minbar, and the prayer niche also were damaged by the fire, Martini said. The wooden minbar is identical to the one burned in Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque in 1969, he said.

Valuables were stolen from the mosque's library, Martin said, including a transparent box purported to contain a strand of hair from the Prophet Muhammad, along with centuries-old handwritten copies of the Qur?an.

Assad issued a presidential decree to form a committee to repair the mosque by the end of 2013, although it's not clear what such a body could do amid a raging civil war. The mosque's last renovations began about 20 years ago and were completed in 2006.

In other developments Monday:

? The Syria military denied reports by a human rights group that it has been dropping cluster bombs ? indiscriminate scattershot munitions ? during fighting. The denial came in a statement carried by the state-run SANA news agency.

Allegations that cluster bombs were used are "baseless and are part of media propaganda that aims to divert international public opinion from crimes committed by armed terrorist groups," the statement said.

The New-York based Human Rights Watch on Sunday cited amateur video and testimony from the front lines in making the allegation that Assad's government has been using the bombs that are banned by most nations in what the group said was a new sign of desperation and disregard for its own people.

? The European Union stepped up pressure on Assad's regime, banning Syrian Arab Airlines from EU airports.

At a meeting in Luxembourg, EU foreign ministers added 28 people to those whose assets are frozen and who are denied EU visas. They also froze the assets of two more companies, including the airline.

? The U.N. envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, arrived in Baghdad for talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other officials on the neighbouring country's civil war. Brahimi is touring the region to try to resolve the Syrian crisis.

? Turkey forced a Syrian-bound plane from Armenia to land in order to search the cargo for weapons. The plane, which was carrying aid for Aleppo, was granted permission to fly in Syrian airspace on condition that it could be searched for military equipment, said Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal.

After the search, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said the cargo contained humanitarian aid and was allowed to continue to Syria.

Last week, Turkey forced a Syrian passenger plane travelling from Moscow to Damascus to land in Ankara on suspicion it carried military gear. Russia, which has backed Assad, said the equipment was spare parts for radar systems.

Over the weekend, Syria and Turkey barred each other's commercial aircraft from flying over their respective territories. The bans came after a week of exchanging fire across their volatile border.

? The Turkish government said the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey surpassed the 100,000 mark and that about 7,000 more were waiting at the border to get in.

British man killed after charter boat capsizes on seal-watching trip in Cape Town, South Africa

  • Lynette Hartman, 55, and Bronwyn Armstrong were stuck under a hull
  • Given breathing equipment and before being persuaded to remove their life jackets so they could swim down and clear of the 36ft hull
  • Both women were treated for hypothermia and one suffered damage to her eyes from diesel in the water getting behind her contact lenses
  • Peter Hyett, 64, from south Wales, died after the charter boat overturned

Two British women endured a terrifying four hours trapped under a tourist boat after it capsized in shark-infested waters near Cape Town.

Lynette Hartman, 55, and Bronwyn Armstrong were stuck under one of the two hulls and survived by breathing pockets of air.

Fellow tourist Peter Hyett, 64, Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales, died after the charter boat, which was carrying 40 people on a seal-spotting trip, overturned just after at 2pm on Saturday.

The two British women were found clinging on beneath the boat by divers looking for bodies and rescuers communicated by tapping on the hull.

?

With the sea temperature at less than 10C (50F), they would have been unlikely to survive for much longer than an hour if they had been in open water.

Police divers gave them breathing equipment and emergency scuba training before persuading them to remove their life jackets so they could swim down and clear of the 36ft hull.

Craig Lambinon, of the National Sea and Rescue Institute, said most of the passengers were rescued by nearby charter boats.

But he said the two women ?had somehow become trapped when the boat flipped and had found an air pocket which they were using to breathe?, Mr Lambinon said.

?They were freezing cold as they were wearing just their life jackets and normal clothes.

?The teams found them but they were very scared and it took a long time to coax them to take off their life jackets and swim out.

?The women had to be coached in the water in using the breathing equipment and were eventually freed at around 5.50pm.

?It was obviously a terrifying ordeal for them, but they should now start to recover.?

Both women were treated for hypothermia and Miss Hartmann suffered damage to her eyes from diesel in the water getting behind her contact lenses.

Survivors ? treated in Cape Town hospitals for hypothermia and shock ? said the motorboat lost power and took on water before being swept on to rocks.

Mr Hyett was taken to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

The dead Briton's wife and daughter Suzanne, 63, and her daughter Helen, 37, from Bournemouth, survived the accident and were treated in hospital.

Last night after identifying the body Mrs Hyett said: 'At the moment things are a bit raw. It?s been such a shock.'

City of Cape Town emergency services spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the two women were ?totally devastated ? we are offering them all the care and help we can?.

The family had been due to return to the UK yesterday after a two-week holiday in South Africa

The coast around Cape Town is also known for a large population of great white sharks.

A second man, South African tour guide John Roberts, also died in the water.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: ?We can confirm the death of a British national in this incident. Several British nationals were also hospitalised following the incident, most of whom have now been released.?

Alive: Rescuers help survivors after the accident, which took place off in the seaside town of Hout Bay

The motorised boat, called the Miroshga, capsized three miles out to sea as it carried tourists from the fishing port of Hout Bay to Duiker Island, known for its large seal colony.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority has launched an investigation into the accident.

Passenger Emma Tengskog, a Swedish tourist, said: ?I was up on the roof. Suddenly I saw a lot of water inside the boat.

?We drifted to the rocks, then there were a lot of waves coming. One big wave hit the boat and it flipped over.?

Fisherman Alfonso Wichman, whose boat was the first at the scene, said: ?The first thing we saw was the boat capsized and an empty life raft, and then dozens of people thrashing in the waves.

?It looked like a nightmare. We were especially concerned about the children and elderly.?

The website of tour operator Southern Ambition Marine Safaris says safety on the Miroshga, which runs regular whale, dolphin and seal-watching trips, ?is of paramount importance?.

The Hyetts, who had both been married previously, had been on holiday with Mrs Hyett?s daughter Helen since October 1.

A family friend said last night: ?This is such a shock. They were so happy and enjoying life together. Sue had beaten breast cancer just a few years ago and they were making the most of his retirement and the time they had together.

?Peter was a fabulous person and they were a great, devoted couple.?

The couple had retired to the seaside town of Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, where Mrs Hyett? had grown up, after living in the Bournemouth area. Mr Hyett was believed to have been in the RAF as a younger man.

The family had been ?happy and relaxed? in the days before the accident, according to a hotel worker who met them when they spent Thursday night in Swellendam, 140 miles east of Cape Town.

Renette Henrico, assistant manager at the Aan de Oever Guest House, said: ?They were really relaxed, in the holiday vibe.?

OneBeat Brings Brains To Brainstorming - business | Stuff.co.nz

SAME BEAT: Terry Stewart, left, and David Patterson, co-founders of organisation development company OneBeat.

KENT BLECHYNDEN/Fairfax NZ

SAME BEAT: Terry Stewart, left, and David Patterson, co-founders of organisation development company OneBeat.

Organisation development agency OneBeat has been bringing corporate engagement techniques, used at the United Nations and companies such as Apple and Walmart, from the United States to Wellington.

Government ministries, businesses undergoing mergers and companies wanting to boost staff motivation levels have hired it to improve operations.

Business consultants Terry Stewart, a former Ernst & Young accountant, and Chapman Tripp consultant David Patterson, set up OneBeat after being inspired by how the appreciative inquiry technique had brought the public and private sectors together in the United States city of Cleveland.

The appreciative inquiry method used there, popularised by Case Western University organisational behaviour professor David Cooperrider, asks firms to look at their positive qualities and include all levels of staff in brainstorming and decision-making.

"David [Patterson] and I started out looking at leadership in New Zealand, particularly focused on civil service, and thinking if we had good leadership would we get more achievement and good outcomes rather than people pushing things around and around in circles and not achieving very many results - this being a casual observation of the public sector in New Zealand over a 20-year period," Stewart said.

The approach works by bringing staff from all levels of an organisation into the same room for sessions that can last from a few hours to a few days to develop a new strategic plan. Every person in the business is given a voice, by working in small groups during the sessions so that all staff have a chance to speak.

Patterson said appreciative inquiry came from making inquiries into what the strengths of an organisation were, what the staff appreciated about being there and using that to create a positive vision for the future.

"I've run into some challenging situations where analytical people think it is really warm and fuzzy, but at end they come out absolutely engaged and enthused. People say they find it very empowering."

While younger staff often suggested getting pay rises and taking more holidays, they usually exercised reasonable levels of responsibility.

Stewart said that essentially it was a concept of democracy. "I think it's a complete fallacy that one or two people at the top of an organisation can come up with what's best for the whole organisation."

Typically when strategic plans are being developed, management formulates a plan they then share with the rest of the business, asking staff to get on board to support the concept. Appreciative inquiry is based around the whole system of a business including board management, staff and suppliers.

"It is strengths based, rather than talking about all the problems, issues, weaknesses . . . [It is] what has gone right in the past, what the organisation's strengths are that we need to build to do more of the things that are going well."

In his experience in project management and consulting, Stewart found most New Zealand businesses were mediocre at staff engagement and some were downright dysfunctional.

"Occasionally I come across a company where all its staff are engaged and energised, people love coming to work, but that's a rarity. When I do come across it, I wonder what is it about them that makes them unique. It always comes back to building on strengths involving everyone."

Asian shares ease on corporate earnings worry

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares fell on Monday on growth concerns ahead of the third-quarter corporate earnings season, lifting the safe-haven dollar which in turn undermined commodities.

As risk sensitive assets retreated, the dollar index measured against a basket of six major currencies gained 0.4 percent.

A stronger dollar and worries that a slowing global economy may further dent fuel demand pushed U.S. crude futures down more than $1 to $90.82 a barrel. Brent fell 0.6 percent to $113.99.

The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.3 percent.

Tokyo's Nikkei average was down 0.1 percent.

U.S. stocks wrapped up their worst week in four months, led lower on Friday by financial shares. More financial institutions will report earnings in coming days, including Citigroup , Goldman Sachs and Bank of America , amid concerns about their shrinking profit margins.

"People are just cautious, quite reluctant. It is not only equities, it is property and a whole range of asset classes, people are happy to have the money in the bank rather than put it to work," said Burrell & Co director Richard Herring.

"We will probably need a good earnings reporting season out of the U.S. or a change in the environment here - a more certain outlook," Herring said.

A decline in Chinese consumer and producer prices in September left scope for policy easing to underpin growth.

Data over the weekend from China, the world's second-largest economy after the United States, offered some positive news, suggesting government moves to underpin growth are working and additional policy action may not be needed.

China's broad M2 money supply rose more than expected in September while its exports grew at roughly twice the rate expected in September and imports recovered.

"The better than expected upswing in Chinese exports follows similar outcomes for Taiwan and Korea and may be consistent with a bottoming in global manufacturing PMIs in suggesting a possible stabilisation or improvement in global growth," said Shane Oliver, head of investment strategy at AMP Capital.

Commodity currencies failed to cling to an early lift, with the Australian dollar falling 0.6 percent to $1.0204, close to the near three-month low of $1.0149 plumbed a week ago.

US POSES RISK

The encouraging Chinese data could not completely dispel concerns about the global slowdown, with the euro zone's prolonged debt crisis dragging on.

Investors should brace for three or four months of jittery markets due to uncertainty over support for Spain and the looming "fiscal cliff" threatening the U.S. economy, BlackRock Chief Executive Laurence Fink told Reuters on Saturday. Fink warned that the U.S. stock market could lose 5 to 10 percent in a correction in the final months of the year.

"Markets have yet to fully reflect concerns about the 'fiscal cliff' but the issue represents a major downside risk," Takao Hattori, senior investment strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities in Tokyo said .

Orders related to the U.S. military industry may feel the pinch as automatic across-the-board budget cuts set to begin on January 2 if there is no deal on deficit reductions, Hattori added.

The era of rising Western spending on weapons and wars is over, providing a more challenging environment for major arms manufacturers.

Hattori also said markets have been supported by expectations and hopes, rather than conviction, over how Europe will resolve its debt crisis.

The euro slipped 0.4 percent to $1.2897 as Europe muddles through debt relief measures for Spain and Greece.

Investors expect highly-indebted Spain to request assistance, triggering the European Central Bank's programme to buy bonds of struggling euro zone states that ask for aid.

They also hope Europe will not allow Greece to leave the currency union.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has said his government expects to agree a new austerity package with its lenders and for the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to bridge their differences on how to cut the country's debt by the time EU leaders meet on October 18-19.

Euro zone officials are considering new ways to reduce Greece's huge debts because delays to reforms by Athens and continued recession have put the target of a debt to GDP ratio of 120 percent in 2020 out of reach, euro zone officials said.

Euro zone officials also said Spain could ask for financial aid from the euro zone in November.

Asian credit markets weakened, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index widening by 2 basis points.

Do you see cosmetic surgery in your near future? If your answer is yes, you are part of a large group. Read this article to find out more about surgery and make sure this is something you want to do. Consider this article as a first step toward educating yourself about cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic surgery is an emotionally draining and stressful process itself, so try to have your procedure scheduled during an otherwise unstressful time in your life. Recovering from surgery is tough and if you?re not in a good place in your mind, you?ll find that it is doubly hard. As well, your emotional well-being could be worse if you have a slow recovery.

What questions should you ask? Before you decide on a surgery, you need a lot of information from the surgeon. Check to see if the surgeon has been board certified. Ask to see pictures of patients he or she has operated on. Speak with the surgeon about the actual surgery, medications that will be used, and the whole process of recovery.

There are always risks associated with anesthesia. One example is unusual or abnormal heart rates during surgery. General anesthesia can sometimes cause irregular heart beats. You may not get sufficient blood flow through your body while under the influence of anesthesia, causing this problem. An irregular heart beat may be the result.

Reconstructive surgery is a better term than cosmetic surgery for a few reasons. Talking about reconstructive surgery will help everyone understand what this procedure is about and you will not be stereotyped for your use of cosmetic surgery.

Give yourself some time to talk about prices with your doctor. Ensure that you both agree on the payment method, whether it will be cash up-front or a payment plan. Come to an agreement about the final payment with your doctor.

There are some specific things you need to start doing about 1 month before your surgery. The most vital things that you need to consider is the use of pain killers. You should not use any for a month before your procedure. This is a good idea because they make blood thinner, and that will affect the way your skin heals.

Your knowledge about plastic surgery procedures has likely increased extensively. Start taking the right steps today so you can learn more about cosmetic surgery and whether it is right for you. Do not be afraid, in time you will have a better looking body that you and others will love.

Koch brothers warn employees of layoffs if Obama re-elected

Romney campaigning in Florida (Justin Sullivan/Getty)

Koch Industries, the Wichita, Kan.-based company run by the billionaire Koch brothers, sent a voter information packet to 45,000 employees of its Georgia Pacific subsidiary earlier this month.

In it was a letter, dated Oct. 1, from Koch Industries president Dave Robertson implicitly warning that "many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences" of voting for President Obama and other Democrats in the 2012 elections, a list of conservative candidates the company's political action committee endorses and a pair of editorials: one, by David Koch, supporting Mitt Romney, and the other, by Charles Koch, condemning Obama.

"While we are typically told before each Presidential election that it is important and historic, I believe the upcoming election will determine what kind of America future generations will inherit," Robertson's letter--first published by InTheseTimes.com--begins. "If we elect candidates who want to spend hundreds of billions in borrowed money on costly new subsidies for a few favored cronies, put unprecedented regulatory burdens on businesses, prevent or delay important new construction projects, and excessively hinder free trade, then many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences, including higher gasoline prices, runaway inflation, and other ills. This is true regardless of what your political affiliation might be."

Robertson's letter continued:

(In These Times)

To help you engage in the political process, we have enclosed several items in this packet. For most of you, this includes information about voter registration deadlines and early voting options for your state. At the request of many employees, we have also provided a list of candidates in your state that have been supported by Koch companies or by the KOCHPAC, our employee political action committee.

I want to emphasize two things about these lists. First, and most important, we believe any decision about which candidates to support is -- as always -- yours and yours alone, based on the factors that are most important to you. Second, we do not support candidates based on their political affiliation. We evaluate them based on who is the most market-based and willing to support economic freedom for the benefit of society as a whole.

If you are concerned about our economy, our future and enhancing the quality of life for all Americans, then I encourage you to consider the principles of your candidates and not just their party affiliation. It is essential that we are all informed and educated voters. Our future depends on it.

It's not the first time Koch Industries has sent employees political packets. Just before the 2010 midterm elections, Koch sent staffers an urgent mailer that the Nation said was "full of alarmist right-wing propaganda."

Last week, David Siegel, the founder and CEO of Florida-based Westgate Resorts, sent an email to employees informing them that layoffs are likely if Obama is reelected:

It's quite simple. If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company. Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone.

So, when you make your decision to vote, ask yourself, which candidate understands the economics of business ownership and who doesn't? Whose policies will endanger your job? Answer those questions and you should know who might be the one capable of protecting and saving your job. While the media wants to tell you to believe the "1 percenters" are bad, I'm telling you they are not. They create most of the jobs. If you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the "1%"; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country.

As Gawker noted, Siegel and his wife were the subjects of "The Queen of Versailles," a recent documentary "about their ongoing quest to build the largest house in America." And Siegel has often claimed credit for George W. Bush's victory over Al Gore in the 2000 presidential race. ("I had my managers do a survey on every employee [8,000 total]," Siegel told Bloomberg BusinessWeek. "If they liked Bush, we made them register to vote. But not if they liked Gore.")

Siegel and the Koch brothers are not alone in issuing anti-Obama missives to employees. According to MSNBC, Arthur Allen, chief executive of ASG Software Solutions, wrote a similar email to his staffers on Sept. 30:

Many of you have been with ASG for over 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years. As you know, together, we have been able to keep ASG an independent company while still growing our revenues and customers. But I can tell you, if the US re-elects President Obama, our chances of staying independent are slim to none. I am already heavily involved in considering options that make our independence go away, and with that all of our lives would change forever. I believe that a new President and administration would give US citizens and the world the renewed confidence and optimism we all need to get the global economies started again, and give ASG a chance to stay independent. If we fail as a nation to make the right choice on November 6th, and we lose our independence as a company, I don't want to hear any complaints regarding the fallout that will most likely come.

In the email, Allen added: "I am asking you to give us one more chance to stay independent by voting in a new President and administration on November 6th."

Banks see core business understanding as most important IT ...

Yes banks are more interested in their IT suppliers understanding core business processes than the cloud or specific software. This is a warning to suppliers.

I blogged recently about how banks are the still the biggest spenders in the IT outsourcing sector. I also asked the question what are the spending money on.

Here is the post I wrote: Banks still biggest IT outsourcers but where is the money going?

It was based on the findings of a large report from KPMG.

Fujitsu have this time kindly provided information about what bank CIOs are planning over the next few years. The banking sector is not just the most interesting IT outsourcing sector because its massive spend but also because it was hit hardest by the downturn. It has had to change the most as a result of the crash, particularly as it was partly blamed.

Here is an article I wrote about Fujitsu's Financial Services Report.

Click the image below to view the entire report.

fujitsu report1.png

The survey also revealed that 51% see reducing cost as a top priority, 27% said upgrading IT systems, 22% improving customer experience, 20% mobile banking and 18% said moving to the cloud.

A total of 85% said the IT department is attempting to meet the needs of the business by doing more with less.

When it comes to moving to the cloud, 40% of all banks said they have already implemented cloud across their organisation, and 29% said they planned to do so. A significant 22% said they do not see the cloud as an enabler for change and will not move any systems to it.

How Did Skratch Labs Begin?

Skratch Labs is the brainchild of Dr. Allen Lim. He was best known for his time with various professional sports cycling teams, at least until now. During his time as a sport scientist and coach, he heard a variety of concerns from professional cyclists regarding their sports drinks. They were too sweet. They did not contain enough sodium, so cyclists were not staying properly hydrated. The various unnatural ingredients were causing rotgut, making the athletes sick to their stomachs during rides.

These problems were nothing new in the world of professional cycling. This was the norm to this point. Riders needed easily digestible food and sports drinks that were loaded with carbs and sugar to give them a quick burst. If an upset stomach was a side effect, so be it.

This all changed when Dr. Lim began working in his lab to create products specifically for endurance athletes. His main concerns were hydration and the stomach issues cyclists were experiencing. Born out of his lab were the "Secret Drink Mix" and his now infamous rice cakes. Both of these products use all natural ingredients meant to hydrate and energize the rider without creating the stomach issues experienced when consuming other products on the market. This is how Skratch Labs was born.
