Home Depot adds three new major appliance brands
Home Depot may be the largest home improvement retailer but when it comes to selling major appliances it trails behind Sears, the leader, and Lowe's. In a seeming effort to change that, Home Depot has added three new appliance lines, Whirlpool, Electrolux and Frigidaire, brands that are already sold by its competitors. All three have fared pretty well in Consumer Reports appliance tests.
According to the Top 100 Major Appliance Retailers Report from Twice, Sears' appliance sales slipped three percent in 2010 to $7.3 billion, while sales declined nearly two percent at Lowe's, to $5.5 billion. In contrast, Home Depot saw a one percent increase, to $3.4 billion.
Home Depot already sells Whirlpool's brandmates Maytag and Amana. Frigidaire is in the Electrolux family. The big box store will be adding ranges, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and washer-dryer pairs. Starting this summer, the retailer will expand the appliance sections of a limited number of stores and make the new products available through the company's Depot Direct delivery network in all U.S. stores, according to a company press statement.
Overall, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and Electrolux are well represented in Consumer Reports top appliance picks although they do better in some product categories than others. Kenmore, the house brand of Sears, is also very well represented. Thirty models from Home Depot's three new brands appear on our recommended list of refrigerators including two bottom-freezer models, nine side-by-sides and 19 top freezers. They also fare well in our brand reliability for refrigerators, especially Whirlpool.
One-third of the models on our list of recommended freezers come from Whirlpool or Frigidaire including the self-defrost uprights Whirlpool EV161NZT, $700, and Frigidaire FFU21F5H[W], $650, which are both CR Best Buys. The brands' representation isn't quite as robust in the other categories and there are no models from those three brands on our list of recommended dishwashers.

U.S. equities were in for a roller coaster ride today, as mixed earnings data and poor economic reports led major indexes to slide sideways for the majority of the trading day. Today?s biggest headliner was Apple, whose quarterly earnings missed the mark: this is only the second time in 39 quarters that the behemoth company missed analysts? expectations. Blue chips, however, managed to pull their weight as Boeing along with other large?industrial?companies reported strong earnings. Markets were?disappointed?with today?s U.S. housing data, which came in significantly lower than expected. New home sales in June were reported at 350,000, well below the?forecasted?372,000. Across the Atlantic, UK GDP also came in worse than expected, showing a decline of 0.7% versus the predicted 0.2% decline. Australia?s consumer price index showed a slight slowdown in inflation from last year?s 1.6% reading [see?ETF Technical Trading FAQ].
The Van Eck Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) was one of the strongest performers, gaining 3.05% on the day. This ETF was bolstered by a rally in gold spot prices coupled with a rise in commodities across the board. The United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was one of the weakest performers, shedding 3.15% on the day. After a wildly successful few days of trading, this ETF cooled off its winning streak ahead of tomorrow?s inventory reports as profit taking?pressures?prompted investors to lock in gains. Mother arrested after leaving baby in hot car
Police arrested the mother of a toddler who was found unconscious after allegedly being left in a sweltering vehicle. KNSD's Diana Guevara reports.

A mother in National City, Calif., was arrested Tuesday after leaving her baby strapped inside her car while she shopped, police said.
The baby was found by emergency personnel in an unconscious state, soaked in sweat from sitting in the direct sunlight, according to National City Police Sgt. Julian Villagomez.
Surveillance footage showed the woman left the car in the East Plaza Boulevard shopping center at about 3 p.m. for about 10 minutes while shopping at a clothing store nearby.
Police received a call from a maintenance worker, who noticed the 4-month old inside the four-door sedan.
First-responders broke into the car through the window to rescue the baby, who was unconscious. The baby was revived and taken to Rady Children's Hospital.
The baby is said to be okay.
The mother, who police identified as Starley Cristal Geart, 25, came out of the store when she saw police near her car, and told authorities that she only left for a minute.
Witnesses described her reaction as nonchalant.
"She wasn?t sad or crying or anything," one witness said. "It didn?t even bother her. I don?t know how a parent can be like that."
Highs in National City on Tuesday reached about 75 degrees, but firefighters said temperature inside the car could have gotten as high as 140 degrees.
Geart was booked into jail on child-endangerment charges.?The baby's case will be handled by Child Protective Services.

Earlier this week, the three-year-old daughter of foster parents in Jackson County, W.Va., was found dead after the family forgot her inside their SUV for three hours in 87-degree weather, reported NBC affiliate WSAZ.com. Charges are expected to be filed against the parents for Sunday's incident.
Fifteen children have died so far?from being left in hot cars in 2012, according to Golden Gate Weather Services, which tracks child hyperthermia fatalities. In 2011, there were 33 hot-car child deaths.?
