Shape from sound: New methods to probe the universe
Apr. 3, 2013 ? As the uni?verse expands, it is con?tin?u?ally sub?jected to energy shifts, or "quan?tum fluc?tu?a?tions," that send out lit?tle pulses of "sound" into the fab?ric of space?time. In fact, the uni?verse is thought to have sprung from just such an energy shift.
A recent paper in the jour?nal Phys?i?cal Review Let?ters reports a new math?e?mat?i?cal tool that should allow one to use these sounds to help reveal the shape of the uni?verse. The authors recon?sider an old ques?tion in spec?tral geom?e?try that asks, roughly, to what extent can the shape of a thing be known from the sound of its acoustic vibra?tions? The researchers approached this prob?lem by break?ing it down into small work?able pieces, accord?ing to author Tejal Bhamre, a Prince?ton Uni?ver?sity grad?u?ate stu?dent in the Depart?ment of Physics.
To under?stand the authors' method, con?sider a vase. If one taps a vase with a spoon, it will make a sound that is char?ac?ter?is?tic of its shape. Sim?i?larly, the tech?nique Bhamre and her coau?thors devel?oped could, in prin?ci?ple, deter?mine the shape of space?time from the per?pet?ual ring?ing caused by quan?tum fluctuations.
The researchers' tech?nique also pro?vides a unique con?nec?tion between the two pil?lars of mod?ern physics -- quan?tum the?ory and gen?eral rel?a?tiv?ity -- by using vibra?tional wave?lengths to define the geo?met?ric prop?erty that is spacetime.
Bhamre worked with coau?thors David Aasen, a physics grad?u?ate stu?dent at Cal?tech, and Achim Kempf, a Water?loo Uni?ver?sity pro?fes?sor of physics of information.

Research examines ancient Puebloans and the myth of maize
Apr. 2, 2013 ? Research from the University of Cincinnati shows that perhaps the ancient Puebloans weren't as into the maize craze as once thought.
Nikki Berkebile, a graduate student in anthropology in UC's McMicken College of Arts & Sciences, has been studying the subsistence habits of Puebloans, or Anasazi, who lived on the southern rim of the Grand Canyon in the late 11th century. Traditional ethnographic literature indicates these ancient American Indians were heavily dependent on maize as a food source, but Berkebile isn't so sure about that.
"I'm trying to assess sustainable subsistence strategies within the time period of the site," Berkebile says. "I'm not trying to bash anyone who says maize is not on the table, because I have maize in my samples. I'm just saying maize is not as important as once thought."
Berkebile will present her research, "Investigating Subsistence Diversity in the Upper Basin: New Archaeobotanical Analysis at MU 125," at the 78th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology (SAA), held April 3-7 in Honolulu. More than 3,000 scientists from around the world attend the event to learn about research covering a broad range of topics and time periods.
The MU 125 archaeological site in northern Arizona features a multi-room masonry structure occupied by the ancient Puebloans from 1070-1090. Berkebile looks for ancient plant remains inside soil samples excavated from the site. She uses a "flotation" technique to reveal the secrets hidden within the ancient earth. By dropping the soil into water-filled buckets and swirling them just right, the lightweight bits of plants will rise to the water's surface, allowing them to be skimmed off. Berkebile analyzes and catalogs those often tiny plant fragments with help from a small team of fellow graduate and undergraduate students.
What she's found so far suggests the Puebloans of MU 125 dined on much more than just maize. Berkebile has uncovered many examples of other plant life the Puebloans might have used as a food source such as purslane, pinyon nut, juniper berries, globemallow and even cactus. The diverse amount of wild resources combined with the area's scarcity of water and seasonal climate -- prone to periods of drought and frost -- makes Berkebile think the Puebloans had to rely on more than maize to survive.
"If you think about the climate of the Upper Basin, there's only 145 frost-free days in which you could grow maize," Berkebile says. "What are you going to do for those months when you don't have anything?"
Berkebile thinks it's likely the Puebloans lived at the MU 125 site year-round and to do so they would have needed to develop sustainable agricultural methods that complemented their maize crops. She uses the plant samples she's found at the site to assess the Puebloans' agricultural strategy. Her research splits the strategy into three categories:
- Cultivated wild resources: These are hardy and easy-to-cultivate plants that existed in the Southwest a thousand years before maize. Examples at MU 125 include purslane, globemallow and chenopodium.
- Gathered wild resources: These are also Southwestern plants that predated maize, but they weren't necessarily actively cultivated. Puebloans would gather what they needed from these plants and bring them home to process. Examples at MU 125 include pinyon nut, juniper berries and cactus.
- Domesticated resources: These are plants brought to the Southwest by humans and made to adapt to the environment. Examples at MU 125 include maize and possibly a type of bean.
Berkebile hopes her research can be a game-changer in how archaeologists perceive ancient cultures' reliance on maize, and also a mind-changer in the way modern society views its environmental resources. She thinks there are aspects of the Puebloans' intercropping strategies and implementation of wild resources that could be adapted to a modern context. More importantly, she thinks how Puebloans thought about food is an important lesson for today.
"We think that we can just go to the grocery store any time and get whatever we want," Berkebile says. "To the ancient Puebloans, it was all about seasonal availability. And if we have a mind-set that we can have certain foods when they are in season, the process becomes a lot more sustainable."

Edimax AC1200 Wireless Dual-Band USB Adapter
The Edimax AC1200 Wireless Dual-Band Adapter is the second pre-draft 802.11ac adapter I've tested. The first was D-Link's Wireless AC1200 Dual Band USB Adapter (DWA-182). The D-Link adapter provided few throughput gains when paired with an 11ac router as compared with a 3x3 802.11n adapter and the same router. Not until I tested the Edimax adapter did I see the speed gains touted by 802.11ac technology. It's a powerful adapter when paired with the Edimax AC1200 Wireless Concurrant Dual-Band Router ?or with another vendor's 11ac router as I discovered with Linksys' EA6500 11ac router.
I didn?t see the quite the same killer speeds when testing in modes other than 802.11ac, but I still got very good throughput, especially at 5GHz in 802.11n mode.
Specs
This is a USB 3.0 adapter, so to leverage the best performance you'll want to connect it to a USB 3.0 port. The adapter has an intriguing design?the antenna flips up out of the housing and stands vertically. This design likely improves communication with a router.? The one caution is that the little plastic piece that stands up could get broken with rough treatment, so be gentle.
The adapter is currently available on the market and lists for $59.99. When the Edimax router ships in May, users will be able to purchase the router and adapter as a dual-pack bundle for $169.99.
Setup
The adapter's packaging includes a quick install guide and a tiny CD-ROM that has the EZMax setup wizard, a user manual, and the install guide in multiple languages. For those without optical drives, all of the disc's content can be downloaded from Edimax's website.
As I experienced with the Edimax AC1200 router, the adapter's install process is quick and clean. Setup only involves inserting the mini-disc and clicking an icon to install the driver. I was pleased to see that the driver install did not include a wireless utility that overlays Windows' native wireless management. Third-party wireless managers that sometimes install with adapter drivers can add a layer of complexity to managing a client's wireless settings.
Performance
I really liked the way this adapter performed. I had no issues connecting to Wi-Fi networks, no drops. The adapter registered the highest throughput tested in our lab among consumer wireless devices. D-Link's 11ac adapter did a little better sustaining throughput, as far as range goes, as I moved further from the router, though. Below is a comparison chart comparing the Edimax adapter to D-Link's adapter, in 11ac and 802.11n mode, as well as to my laptop's integrated 3x3 adapter:
Remember, because I have lots of access points in my testing area I did not expect to see speeds anywhere close to the 867 Mbps Edimax claims the adapter is capable of when used with its AC1200 wireless router. Those speeds are achieved in an interference free clean-room. The speed it did reach, nearly 200 Mbps at one point with Edimax's router, is an excellent speed given our harsh testing environment. When I tested the adapter with Linksys' EA6500 router, throughout reached 266 Mbps, absolutely amazing speed in my testbed.
The adapter didn?t deliver blazing fast speeds when tested with another vendor's router (I tested using the Western Digital my Net N900) in 802.11n mode but I still saw triple-digit throughput. That's fast?definitely fast enough to handle demanding media streaming.
Edimax's adapter seems to not only work best when using Edimax's 802.11ac wireless router, but also with a third-party router . One caveat: you won't see optimal speeds without a wireless client with a USB 3.0 port. It will work with USB 2.0, but you'll notice a sizeable drop-off in speed using the slower USB 2.0 standard. The Edimax AC1200 Wireless Dual-Band USB adapter is an impressive adapter in the new 11ac space, and it's a 4.5 star Editors' Choice for wireless adapters.

A new photo of Sandy Hook massacre gunman Adam Lanza has emerged: a college ID snapshot that shows him staring wide-eyed into the camera as though scared out of his wits.
The picture, one of just a few that have been made public since the Dec. 14 shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, was part of Lanza's records from Western Connecticut State University, where he took classes in 2008 and 2009.
There is nothing in the documents that would foreshadow the monstrous attack, just a few odd notes.
When he took a placement exam in May 2008, Lanza refused to answer some background questions ? including his gender.
Asked whether he had a "documented disabling condition" that could impact his test scores, he said no ? although his mother had told people he had Asperger's disease, which is low on the autism spectrum.
Lanza was just 16 at the time, but he scored high on the test ? in the 90th percentile. The records also show he registered for a precalculus class, but it's unclear if he ever took it.
He did take three computer science courses, earning an A and an A-minus in two of them, and American history, where he received an A-minus.
He got a C in a a class called "Introduction to Ethical Theory."
No grade was entered for "Introduction to German," and that prompted a post-massacre email on Dec. 17 from the registrar to the German professor, asking for her to submit one. The response was macabre.
"Do you realize that this Lanza Adam is the young man who was from Newtown and shot himself and so many others?" the teacher replied. "I do not think he still needs a grade."
Lanza withdrew from classes at Western Connecticut, and he was not enrolled in any school when he went on his rampage at Sandy Hook, killing 20 children, six staffers and himself after murdering his mother in her bed.
Search warrants released last week revealed that Lanza had an arsenal of guns, knives, samurai swords and ammunition at his disposal.
