J&W announces M001 Cedar Trail nettop, to keep desks and ears happy

J&W announces M001 Cedar Trail nettop, to keep desks and ears happy

If you like your computing to be neither seen, nor heard (or less seen and less heard), J&W has announced another bantam slab of nettop for your consideration. On the inside there's a choice of Cedar Trail D2550, N2800 and N2600 dual-core options, with support for up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Diminutive machines don't mean lack of I/O, and in this case you'll be getting three USB ports, a multicard reader, LAN, HDMI, VGA and RS232. Fanlesstech points out that it's actually a nano-ITX system, which measuring in at only 135 x 128 x 45 mm means it can be tucked away into even more convenient crevices. Just make sure not to hide it away too securely, else that 8011.n WiFi might suffer.

Carrie Underwood is on a roll. The former "American Idol" champ will land her third #1 debut in a row next week when Blown Away easily tops the Billboard 200 tally. Underwood sold 267,000 copies of her fourth effort, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, which was more than enough to hold off Norah Jones , whose Danger Mouse-produced Little Broken Hearts will come in at #2 on sales of 110,000.

There were plenty of other new faces in the top 10, including NOW 42 (#3, 95,000), "So Good" rapper B.o.B's Strange Clouds
(#5, 76,000), the cast album for the NBC show "Smash" (#9, 39,000) and veteran shock rocker Marilyn Manson's Born Villain (#10, 38,000).

The rest of the top 10: Adele, 21 (#4, 77,000), Lionel Richie, Tuskegee (#6, 64,000), Jack White, Blunderbuss (#7, 56,000) and One Direction, Up All Night (#8, 45,000). Though the movie smashed just about every box office record
there is, Avengers Assemble, the hard-rocking soundtrack to "The Avengers," featuring Soundgarden, Shinedown, Rise Against, Papa Roach, Bush, Evanescence and Buckcherry, landed at #11 (27,000).

In the wake of Beastie Boys member Adam "MCA" Yauch's
death on Friday, the group's landmark 1986 debut, Licensed to Ill, broke back onto the charts at #18 on sales of 19,000, as business picked up by more than 800 percent over the previous week.

It was one of several Beastie Boys albums
that crashed back onto the charts, which also included Solid Gold Hits (#51, 8,000), Paul's Boutique (#56, 8,000), Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (#107, 4,000), Ill Communication (#109, 4,000), Check Your Head (#124, 4,000) and Anthology: Sounds of Science (#141, 3,000).

Santigold debuted at #21 with Master of My Make-Believe
(18,000), while the other British boy band, The Wanted, took a major tumble in week two for their debut EP, which plummeted 25 spots in week two to #32 as sales fell 65 percent to 12,000. Madonna also didn't have much to brag about, as MDNA shed another 20 spots to dip to #65 as sales slipped another 30 percent to just under 7,000, leaving the album short of the 500,000 mark.

Underwood also ruled the iTunes album chart, where she edged out B.o.B, who was followed by Jones, White, One Direction, the Beasties' Licensed to Ill, Adele, NOW 42, the "Smash" soundtrack and Manson. On the iTunes singles chart, Gotye continued a strong run with breakout hit, "Somebody That I Used to Know," which beat out Maroon 5's "Payphone," Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," fun.'s "We Are Young" and Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend." One Direction were at #6 with "What Makes You Beautiful," followed by B.o.B's "Both of Us," Nicki Minaj's "Starships," Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" and the Wanted's "Glad You Came."

The top 10 should remain relatively stable next week, as the only new releases will come from Karmin, Silversun Pickups, Keane and Mary Mary.

Faced with Breivik's unflinching account, Norway surprises world with its civility

A reporter covering Anders Behring Breivik's trial marvels at the degree of civility Norwegians have shown him, considering the brutality of the July 2011 terror attacks and his lack of remorse.

In the first two weeks of Anders Behring Breivik's trial, the Norwegian man reiterated his conviction that he did the right thing when he killed 77 people on July 22, 2011 ? even if it meant shooting unarmed Labor party youth members as young as 14 trapped on an island or bombing government buildings in Oslo. Those killed were??legitimate political targets,? he said.

The attacks were ?gruesome but necessary" for preventing Labor from continuing to undermine Norwegian society with its lenient immigration policies, Mr. Breivik said. The party had betrayed the country by promoting the Islamic colonization of Norway and ipso facto the ethnic cleansing of indigenous Norwegians. He would do it all again, he said.?

International onlookers have been shocked to see how civil the whole trial is proceeding, given the scale and brutality of his crimes ? together they are?the worst national tragedy the country has experienced since World War II ??and Breivik's lack of remorse.?

On April 16, the first day of the 10-week trial, a lineup of prosecutors, forensic psychiatrists, and the legal counsel for the victims all approached Breivik in court to shake his hand. Wearing a suit and neatly trimmed beard, he politely extended his right hand to greet them. Outside, people lined up orderly to enter Oslo District Court. There was not a single sign denouncing him, nor any banners calling for the death penalty.

On the second day of the trial, he was allowed to begin his six-day testimony of what happened in the years leading up to the attack, including his preparation for that day. At the end of the first week he recounted, in chilling detail, of how, after packing a ham and cheese sandwich that morning, he shot and killed 69 people at the Labor party youth summer camp on Ut?ya with a Glock pistol and Ruger semi-automatic rifle.

If this all sounds surreal, that?s because it is.?

It is surreal to see a well-dressed upper class man sit in a court and calmly explain how he killed Norwegians to prevent Norway?s demise. It?s incomprehensible to hear how a man, who supposedly had all the economic means and generous provisions of a cradle-to-grave welfare system, could turn into Norway?s most notorious killer in modern times. And that is part of what scares Norwegians: the thought that he is one of them.?

Despite the atrocity of his crimes and his behavior, Norwegians still want to see him get a fair trial. But that means?he has a legal right to explain himself in court, even if there is a risk that he spreads his propaganda. The trial is also key in determining Breivik's sanity, which is at the crux of this case. The prosecution even defended his right to keep reading from his prepared speech on his first day of testimony in spite of protests from the legal counsel for the victims, who were offended by his one-hour long monologue.?

Transforming robot effortlessly turns into a car, faces tougher maneuver into retail (video)

Image

Still bothered by the lack of automated transforming in the official Transformers toys? Then you'll likely want to head straight to the video below to see your dream realized. While details are a bit light, the robot on display was apparently built by Kenji Ishida and JS Robotics, and is just the latest in a series of transforming bots that Ishida has been working on (version eight, to be specific). About the only other detail revealed is that it makes use of 22 servo motors to turn from a car into a surprisingly mobile humanoid robot and, as you might expect, there's no word on any eventual commercial availability.

Feeling the Weight: Some Beginning Notes on Disability, Access ...

This essay was originally published in Issue Ten of Makeshift Magazine.

forsythia

This is a beginning; a dive into waters that I swim every day, but have been taught not to speak about.? I struggle with how to talk about love out loud in a way that holds access and doesn?t diminish love in all its glory, but instead illuminates how ableism twists and threatens love and relationships. Needing to constantly negotiate access for my physical disability within all my relationships in an ableist world has shaped the kind of connection and love I am able to have.? I have been scared to open up the Pandora?s box that holds the intimacies of ableism.? Scared to talk about some of the deepest parts of what disability has meant in my life.

Most days I feel like access and love are like oil and water.? I wonder how the two can possibly coexist.? I am speaking of love broadly, meaning any relationship where there is love, whether that is between friends, lovers, family members (chosen, birth, situational), community members, etc. As a queer disabled woman of color adoptee, I am questioning the very fabric that makes up love and, in particular, disabled people?s access to love?or, rather, the kinds of love (and relationships) that disabled people have access to.? How can disabled people who rely on our loved ones for daily access be our whole selves when that threatens the relationships our access and survival depends on?? And how can this support genuine, deep, loving relationships?

The activist-dreamer-revolutionary part of me believes that access and love don?t have to be separate.? It is the part of me that is committed to revolutionary love, radical love, or whatever it?s being called these days.? It lives off of the idea that somehow, if we work hard enough at this thing called liberation, our lives will be different: institutions, relationships and all.

But my life has proven different.? My lived experience has left me holding one half of my heart in each hand, one for access and one for love, crushed.? I have found myself on cold windy cliffs, staring at the canyon between the two.

I have watched ableism tear apart relationships with people I love.? I have seen access be too much of a barrier for people to be in relationship with each other.? I have made excuses for inaccessibility because I loved people and didn?t want to lose relationship with them.? I have excused racism, sexism, violence, homophobia because I didn?t want to, couldn?t afford to, lose access.? I have asked for access or raised ableism in relationships, only to have those relationships end abruptly. I have stayed in relationships for access and I have been too afraid to enter into relationships because of access. I have had access held over my head, leveraged for able-bodied supremacist means, or treated like a reward for good behavior.? I have had access made invisible or belittled by loved ones; I have had to make access happen so the person providing access didn?t know they were.? I have kept parts of myself from people I love because I was afraid to, didn?t know how to, be whole and complex in the context of needing access.

This is the cruelty of ableism: it robs us from each other.? This is the weight of access.? This is what gets said in whispers, not on the microphone and at the panel.? This is what gets shared in a fleeting glance between us, disabled, sick, crip folks; a recognition, a silent sigh, an unfocused stare.? This is what we don?t share, don?t know how to share, because it is so instinctual, so ground-level, so what?s-the-point-it?s-never-going-to-change.? This is the air I?ve breathed since I can remember, as a disabled child, never knowing it could be any different?never having been able bodied.

The weight of inaccessibility is not logistical.? It is not just about ramps, ASL interpreters, straws and elevators.? It is a shifting, changing wall?an ocean?between you and I.? It is just as much feeling and trauma as it is material and concrete.? It is something felt, not just talked about.? It is made up of isolation from another night at home while everyone else goes to the party.? The fear of being left by the people you love and who are supposed to love you.? The pain of staring or passing, the sting of disappointment, the exhaustion of having the same conversations over and over again.? The throbbing foolishness of getting your hopes up and the shrinking of yourself in order to maintain.? It is an echoing loneliness; part shame, part guilt, part constant apology and thank you.? It is knowing that no matter how the conditions around me change, my body will still not be able to do certain things?it will still need other people, it will still signal dependence, it will still be disabled.

At 30, I have experienced many different kinds of beautiful love, largely because I have had the privilege of not being locked away in an institution, group home or my family?s back room like many disabled people.? And indeed, to question the love I have been honored to experience on this page is terrifying and puts my current relationships, love and access at risk.? But these are the parts of disability justice and liberation that keep me up at night, that have hurt more than any ableist remark, that have left more scars than any surgery.? This is the underbelly of ableism.? This is what I fear we will be left to wrestle with after every building is made accessible and every important policy is passed.? This is what I desire as a queer disabled woman of color adoptee: to be able to love and not have access used as a weapon, and to be able to have access without the fear of losing love.

ASUS Zenbook UX32VD unveiled, packs discrete graphics to flaunt that 1080p screen

New high-resolution Zenbooks are on their way, but ASUS has now revealed another addition that's packing its own discrete graphics. Like its recently unveiled siblings, the Zenbook UX32VD still packs a 1920 x 1080 IPS panel and "the latest Intel Core processor" -- likely something from the Ivy Bridge family, although ASUS is keeping schtum on the details for now. Graphical horsepower is delegated to NVIDIA's GT620, while the UX32VD also had a hybrid HDD on show at the event, not the standard SSD -- explaining why this new model is slightly thicker than the UX31A. Alongside a lack of processor specifics, there was no info on prices or release dates at the Taiwan press event but for now, Engadget Chinese have posted their full impressions at the source below. Ultrabook and graphics mavens can hit up the Google translation for a few more details.
