FDA will investigate added caffeine in foods

(AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration says it will launch a new investigation into foods with added caffeine and their potential impact on the health of children and adolescents.

The FDA's new look at added caffeine is in response to a caffeinated gum introduced this week by Wrigley. Called Alert Energy Gum, it promises "The right energy, right now."

Michael Taylor, FDA's deputy commissioner of foods, said in a statement Monday that the proliferation of caffeine added to foods is "beyond anything FDA envisioned."

Taylor said the agency will look at the potential impact these "new and easy sources" of caffeine will have on children's health and will take action if necessary. The agency previously launched an investigation into the safety of energy drinks.

Man stabs 4 people at church in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Police say a man stabbed four people at a Catholic church in Albuquerque as a Sunday mass was nearing its end.

Police spokesman Robert Gibbs says a man in his 20s jumped over several pews at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church around noon Sunday and walked up to the choir area where he began his attack.

The injuries to the four church-goers weren't life-threatening. All four were being treated at hospitals.

An off-duty police officer and others at the church subdued the attacker and held him down until police arrived.

Gibbs says the attacker is in custody but that police don't yet know his identity, the motive for the stabbings, whether he had any ties to the victims or whether he regularly attended the church.

The stabbings occurred as the choir had just begun its closing hymns.

Archbishop of Santa Fe Michael Sheehan released a statement saying he was saddened by the attack. "I pray for all who have been harmed, their families, the parishioners and that nothing like this will ever happen again," Sheehan said.

The church didn't immediately return calls seeking comment on Sunday afternoon.

Rugged Johnson gives Hawks hope against Pacers

ATLANTA (AP) ? When Ivan Johnson is banging around in the lane and staring down opponents, the Atlanta Hawks are a different team.

They hope the bearded, bruising forward can keep it up in Game 4 of the playoffs against the Indiana Pacers.

While Al Horford was the star of Atlanta's Game 3 rout, it was Johnson who set the physical tone the Hawks so desperately needed after losing the first two games in Indianapolis. He played more than 26 minutes off the bench, scoring seven points, grabbing seven rebounds and picking up five fouls in 90-69 blowout.

"The thing that frustrates the opposition more than anything is the fact that this kid plays hard," coach Larry Drew said Sunday, when both teams practiced at Philips Arena to prepare for Game 4. "He doesn't take possessions off. He will stand up to any challenge, whoever he has to defend. He's a physical, rugged player. A lot of guys don't like playing against guys like that."

Johnson isn't exactly a kid, even though this is just his second year in the league. The 29-year-old has a notorious temper, which resulted in a lifetime ban from the South Korean league for flashing an obscene gesture during a playoff game, and it took a long time before any NBA team was willing to take a chance on him.

The Hawks are glad they did, though Johnson has struggled at times to keep his emotions in check. He was sent home last season for conduct detrimental to the team and, judging by the ominous stare he flashes anytime things don't go his way, he always seems on the verge of crossing the line again.

"The unfortunate thing about Ivan is he has a little bit of a reputation," Drew said. "If he can work at it hard enough, he can shake that. He's just too skilled. A big guy, with his size, with his ability and his mobility, he frustrates a lot of people. He knows how to play. He's got a good knack for the game."

Johnson's defensive presence helped free up Horford to focus more on the offensive end. He responded with 26 points, along with 16 rebounds, as the Hawks built a commanding 24-point lead by halftime and were never seriously threatened.

Atlanta will try to even the best-of-seven series at two wins apiece on Monday night.

The Hawks hope to stick with the lineup that worked so well in their victory ? 7-footer Johan Petro starting at center, with Horford moving to power forward and Josh Smith shifting down to small forward.

Petro missed practice Sunday, returning home to Miami to be with his wife during the birth of their child. She was scheduled to deliver in time for her husband to get back to Atlanta for Game 4.

The bigger lineup ? 3-point specialist Kyle Korver came off the bench ? allowed the Hawks to match up much better with the Pacers at both ends of the court. Guarded by Smith, Paul George was held to 16 points after averaging 25 in the first two games. Indiana's 7-2 center, Roy Hibbert, managed just 8 points after scoring 15.5 per contest in Indiana.

"The whole thing helped us size-wise," Horford said. "We were able to get Petro in there, which made an impact on Hibbert. Then Ivan came in and did the same. They freed me up to get more offensive minded. It just goes hand in hand."

The Pacers turned in a stunningly poor performance after playing so well on their home court, where they averaged 110 points and a 16-point margin of victory. They shot just 27 percent (22 of 81) and turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 24 Atlanta points.

"We really just beat ourselves," George said. "We've got to play tougher and with more of an edge."

Indiana made four of its first six shots, building an 8-1 lead that prompted Drew to call a timeout less than 3 minutes into the game. After that, it was all Hawks. The Pacers missed 30 of their next 36 attempts, trailed 54-30 at halftime, and matched the lowest-scoring first half in the franchise's playoff history.

"Shots weren't falling, but we allowed those shots not to fall," George said. "We weren't aggressive. We weren't taking up our own air space. They were making us catch the ball where they wanted. We really weren't fighting for spots."

If Petro isn't available for Game 4, the Hawks will be in a bit of predicament. The 6-foot-8 Johnson could get the start at center, allowing Horford and Smith to stay in the roles that worked so well Saturday.

Then again, Drew prefers to use Johnson as a backup.

"I don't want to disrupt that," the coach said. "He's done such a good job bringing us energy off the bench. I would hate to lose that if I put him in the starting lineup."

Johnson will accept whatever role he's given.

"I'm just trying to make my presence felt," he told reporters after the game. "That's a matter of being a big man. We've got to throw our bodies around to get what we want."

The Pacers know they'll have to contend with Johnson if they want to regain control of the series.

"He's a great energy guy, a guy that just constantly battles," George said. "He's an emotional player. The whole team feeds off his energy and his motor."

Cyberattack suspect to be sent home to Netherlands

(AP) ? A Dutch citizen arrested in Spain on suspicion of launching what authorities have called the biggest cyberattack in Internet history is expected to be handed over to the Netherlands within 10 days, a Spanish court official said Monday.

The suspect ? identified only by his initials S.K. ? was questioned Saturday in the National Court in Madrid after his arrest last week and agreed to the deal, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because court rules prevent him from giving his name.

Police say the 35-year-old suspect operated from a bunker in northeast Spain and also had a van capable of hacking into networks anywhere in the country. He was arrested Thursday in Granollers, 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Barcelona.

He is accused of attacking the anti-spam watchdog group Spamhaus, whose main task is to halt ads for counterfeit Viagra and bogus weight-loss pills reaching the world's inboxes.

Dutch authorities alerted Spanish police in March of large denial-of-service attacks being launched from Spain that were affecting Internet servers in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the U.S. These attacks culminated with a major onslaught on Spamhaus.

Denial-of-service attacks overwhelm a server with traffic, jamming it with incoming messages. Recent cyberattacks ? such as the ones that caused outages at U.S. banking sites last year ? have tended to peak at 100 billion bits per second. The attack on Spamhaus was three times that size.

Police from the Netherlands, Germany, Britain, Spain and the U.S. took part in the investigation.

Manchin: Gun bill to be reintroduced

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the architects of failed gun control legislation says he's bringing it back.

Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday said he would re-introduce a measure that would require criminal and mental health background checks for gun buyers at shows and online. The West Virginia Democrat says that if lawmakers read the bill, they will support it.

Manchin sponsored a previous version of the measure with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. It failed.

Manchin says there was confusion over what was in the bill.

In the wake of last year's school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Congress took up gun control legislation, but it was blocked by supporters of the powerful pro-gun lobby, the National Rifle Association.

Manchin appeared on "Fox News Sunday."

Mom of four kids killed in S. Carolina fire faces charges

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? The mother of four South Carolina children killed in an accidental mobile home fire was charged Friday in their deaths, authorities said.

Hope Hawkins, 21, faces four counts each of homicide by child abuse and unlawful conduct toward a child, Darlington County Sheriff's Capt. Andy Locklair said. State and local authorities found no signs of arson and think the fire started Wednesday by accident in the kitchen, though exactly what sparked the blaze had not been determined.

Hawkins was not home when firefighters arrived, and showed up moments later, Locklair said. The woman has given conflicting stories about where she was. No one else was in the home at the time.

"It's almost like she may have arrived at the same time as the fire apparatus," Locklair said.

Locklair didn't know if Hawkins had an attorney. She is scheduled to have a bond hearing later Friday.

It took firefighters less than 10 minutes to put out the fire in Hartsville, a city of some 8,000 people that's about 60 miles east of the state capital of Columbia.

Authorities said 10-month-old sisters Myasia and Kynasia Hawkins and their brothers, 2-year-old Camaron Mason and 4-year-old Delonta Dixon, died of smoke inhalation. All four children were found in a bedroom next to the kitchen, Locklair said.

Hawkins could face life in prison if she's convicted of homicide by child abuse, a charge that stems from leaving the children at home alone. The unlawful conduct toward a child charges carry possible sentences of up to 10 years each.

Authorities were still going through records to determine if either law enforcement or social services officials had been called to the home before, Locklair said.

Working With Investor Friendly Real Estate Agents | The Niche Report

?

In order to be successful in real estate investing, you will need to work with others ? specifically people who know this business or can help you build yours. People who can help direct you to buyers for your properties or provide financial assistance or even teach you proven investing buying and selling strategies.

As a real estate investor, you should learn to leverage your time by carefully selecting qualified people to work with on your real estate deals or to help you maintain your investments. A key person that should be on your ?Power Team? is a real estate agent or realtor.

A good working relationship with an investor friendly real estate agent is one of the most important assets an investor can have. For one, when a property you are interested in purchasing is listed with a Realtor, you may want to have your own agent working with you to represent your best interests in the deal.

Secondly,?investor friendly real estate agents?and Realtors?can help you evaluate deals by pulling up sold properties comparable to the one you are thinking of buying.?They will hand you a CMA (comparative market analysis report) that will give you a good idea of the market value for that neighborhood or type of house.

Thirdly, Realtors have access to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), a valuable source for finding potential real estate deals and listing your own future deals for sale. Another great benefit of them having MLS access, is that it can give you a real time snapshot of what current prices and rents are being sought after in the market place by other consumers and real estate investors.

The properties on the MLS will usually include pictures and a good deal of information about the property, including the address of the property, the number of bedrooms and baths, the square footage, and other amenities/features. The MLS may also include any special terms the seller may consider.

There are two remarks sections of an MLS listing. One remark section that the public can see on the MLS listing?and another that can only be viewed by real estate agents. The remark section of the listing will contain clues about the condition of the property and the motivation of the seller that will be important for your real estate offer. Working with an investing friendly real estate has so many benefits.

Choosing a Realtor

When choosing an investor friendly real estate agent or a Realtor that works with investors, ideally you would want an agent who is creative, hard working, aggressive and an agent who knows how and where to find deals.

Most real estate agents have limited experience with investors. They have never done a creative investing real estate transaction. This can be a challenge for an investor and it can take some time to find the right real estate agent, but the time you spend looking for investor friendly?realtors will be well worth it.

One thing to note, most real estate agents are not receptive to ?unusual? offers. They may not believe in the ?nothing down? offers or creative approaches. If you plan to make a creative offer on a real estate deal and you are working with an investor friendly realtor who doesn?t think ?outside the box?- insist on being the one to present the offer because you want the owner to hear the benefits of your offer (as well as build trust). Believing in those benefits will be key to making a convincing presentation.

Let the Realtor know you are looking for distressed properties that need repair. Do not let the real estate agent pre-qualify you. Let them know that you use private funding, are already preapproved by your own bank/lender?and can close quickly.

Finding Investor Friendly Real Estate Agents

It?s recommended that you take the time to search for investor friendly real estate agents who works in your target area when you are just getting started in real estate investing. That?s simple, while driving through your target investing area, look for realtor signs, and pick the three real estate companies or agents with the most signs. As you do this, you may notice an agent dominating the area. Real estate agents usually ?farm? an area just like investors, meaning that they focus on a particular area and work it to get listings. They do this by actively contacting the owners through phone calls, mailing promotional material, and knocking on doors of nearby listings to build a rapport.

At this point just give them a call. Here is an example of a good introduction of a real estate investor to a Realtor:

?Hello my name is _____________. I?ve noticed all of your listings in the __________area. I am in a position to do some investing in real estate. I am looking to buy properties in your area and I want to see if we can develop a relationship.

Would it be easier for you if I gave you my basic criteria likes properties that are income properties or cosmetically distressed fixer-uppers, nothing major like structural or plumbing, single family, 2 -4 multi-units, 20 ? 30% below market value and you arrange to send me out a daily or weekly email with listings that match??

There are many investor friendly real estate agents who advertise online as ?investor friendly realtors? and they at times specialize in income properties like duplexes and understand how to work with properties that are in need of cosmetic repairs. Lastly, ask for referrals from other investors in your REIA or local real estate clubs for real estate agent with experience working with investors.

Leave me a comment below and have a GREAT INVESTING DAY!

Stonehenge archaeologists reveal new theory of why monument was built

Stonehenge may have been built on a site occupied by hunters for?roughly?5,000 prior to its construction.

By Tia Ghose,?LiveScience Staff Writer / April 24, 2013

Visitors are dwarfed by the Stonehenge monument in southern England.

A site near Stonehenge has revealed archaeological evidence that hunters lived just a mile from Stonehenge roughly 5,000 years prior to the construction of the first stones, new research suggests.

What's more, the site, which was occupied continuously for 3,000 years, had evidence of burning, thousands of flint tool fragments and bones of?wild aurochs?, a type of extinct giant cow. That suggests the area near Stonehenge may have been an auroch migration route that became an ancient feasting site, drawing people together from across different cultures in the region, wrote lead researcher David Jacques of the Open University in the United Kingdeom, in an email.

"We may have found the cradle of?Stonehenge, the reason why it is where it is," Jacques wrote. [In Photos: A Walk Through Stonehenge]

The new discovery may also identify the people who first erected structures at Stonehenge. A few gigantic pine posts, possibly totem poles, were raised at Stonehenge between 8,500 and 10,000 years ago, but until now there was scant evidence of occupation in the area that long ago. The new research suggests those ancient structures may perhaps have been raised to honor a sacred hunting ground.

Mysterious monument

For decades, people have wondered at the enigmatic stone structures erected roughly 5,000 years ago in the plains of Wiltshire, England. No one knows why ancient people built the structure: some believe it was a place of ancient worship or a sun calendar, whereas still others think it was a symbol of unity or even that?Stonehenge was inspired by a sound illusion.

The large megaliths, known as sarsens, are up to 30 feet tall and weigh up to 25 tons, while the smaller bluestones weigh up to 4 tons. Researchers think the?giant boulders?came from a quarry near Marlborough Downs, just 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the iconic site, while the bluestones likely came from Preseli Hills in Wales, nearly 156 miles (250 km) away from Stonehenge.

Old photographs

Jacques was looking through archival photographs of the region surrounding Stonehenge when he spotted a site known as Vespasian's Camp, just a mile from Stonehenge in nearby Amesbury.

Realizing that it hadn't been fully surveyed, Jacques began to investigate the area, which harbored a freshwater spring.

Because animals like to stop and drink at such watering holes, Jacques wondered whether ancient man may have settled nearby as well.

The team uncovered roughly 350 animal bones and 12,500 flint tools or fragments, as well as lots of evidence of burning. Carbon dating suggested the area was occupied by humans from 7500 B.C. to 4700 B.C. ? roughly 5,000 years prior to the erection of the?first stones at Stonehenge. [See Photos of the Stonehenge Hunting Ground?]

"The spring may have originally attracted large animals to it, which would have aided hunting and may have led to associations that the area was a sacred hunting ground," Jacques wrote.

In addition, the researchers found tools made from stone from one region of England, but fashioned in the style of another region (for instance, a?stone tool?made from Welsh or Cornwall slate, but made in a style typical of Sussex). That suggests the people from different regions were coming together at the site, Jacques wrote.

Ancient builders?

The findings could help researchers pinpoint why the ancient builders of Stonehenge chose the place they did, Jacques said.?

"We have found a bridge from which transmission of cultural memory about the 'specialness' of the place where the stones were later being put up was possible," Jacques wrote. "We are getting closer to understanding their reasons for putting it up ? it is all to do with ancestors, but those ancestors go much further back than has previously been realised."

The findings show "there was a substantial interest in the Stonehenge landscape well before the stones were hauled there and erected," said Timothy Darvill, an archaeologist at Bournemouth University in the U.K., who was not involved in the study.

Excavations dating to 2008 at Stonehenge also confirm earlier use at the?megalithic site, Darvill wrote. However, what makes the Amesbury discovery special is the large trove of auroch bones found in the area, which suggests the spring was on a natural migration route for the wild aurochs, he said.

A program about the Amesbury site will air on BBC 4 on April 29.

TSX slumps as U.S. economic data, resources weigh

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock market fell on Friday as natural resources stocks slumped and market sentiment turned negative following U.S. economic growth data that fell short of expectations. The U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 2.5 percent rate, an increase from the fourth quarter, but shy of the 3 percent growth analysts were hoping for. The weaker-than-expected data in Canada's biggest trading partner weighed on Canadian stocks.

Growth falls short of forecasts, weakness ahead

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Economic growth regained speed in the first quarter, but not as much as expected, heightening fears an already weakening economy could struggle to cope with deep government spending cuts and higher taxes. Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.5 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Friday, after growth nearly stalled at 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter. Economists had expected a 3.0 percent growth pace.

Chevron profit pinched by cheaper oil, but beats estimates

Lorenzo Fertitta says women?s groups are being used as a pawn by unions in fight for MMA in NY

While on Laurence Holmes podcast on the Score on Monday night, he asked me how it was being a woman covering such a male-dominant sport as mixed martial arts. I answered that while there were some problems and I did come up against some jerks from time to time, MMA was fantastic to me. I pointed out that the few jerks were rarely fighters.

So imagine my surprise when I heard from women's groups that I've long respected that the sport I cover is full of negative attitudes against women. As New York debates legislation sanctioning MMA, women's groups have protested because of the "violent nature of MMA."

"Due to the violent nature of mixed martial arts and the surprisingly high incidence of unchallenged sexism and misogyny displayed by certain fighters, commentators and other public figures associated with this sport, the prospect of legalization in New York state raises legitimate concerns about the increased exposure of our children to this new and potentially very negative influence," stated a bill introduced Friday by state Sen. Liz Krueger, who represents much of Manhattan's east side.

Have MMA figures said and done terribly misogynistic things? Absolutely. But so have NFL players. So have NHL players. Both football and hockey also feature violent collisions and catastrophic injuries. Where are the protests to evict the Buffalo Bills or New York Rangers from the state?

UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, who has been lobbying for MMA's sanctioning in New York for years, thinks that these women's groups are being used as a pawn by the Culinary Union.

?It?s actually kind of sad,? Fertitta said. ?These women?s organizations and women?s groups stand for great things ? yet they are being used as a pawn by the Culinary Union.?

The union has a beef with Fertitta and his brother Frank because they own the largest non-union casinos in Las Vegas. The union has contacted women's groups to bring their attention MMA's rise and possible sanctioning in New York. But what would make more sense for the union to focus on is that fighters don't have a collective bargaining agreement and aren't unionized.

Krueger and others have pointed to links between MMA and violence when no such link has been found. There is also no discussion of how MMA has empowered women as fighters, officials, media and fans, or how women have learned self defense techniques at MMA gyms across the country. Invicta FC, a promotion run by a woman that features women's bouts, must have escaped their view.

There are real problems facing women. Sexual violence, domestic abuse, unequal pay, unequal treatment in the workplace, sexual harassment, and many other serious issues face women every day. Let's focus on how we should solve those real issues, and not a sport that has no proven link to any of these problems.

Cancer cells' Achilles' heel revealed

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Scientists from the Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation Research (MCCIR) have discovered why a particular cancer drug is so effective at killing cells. Their findings could be used to aid the design of future cancer treatments.

Professor Daniel Davis and his team used high quality video imaging to investigate why the drug rituximab is so effective at killing cancerous B cells. It is widely used in the treatment of B cell malignancies, such as lymphoma and leukemia -- as well as in autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

Using high-powered laser-based microscopes, researchers made videos of the process by which rituximab binds to a diseased cell and then attracts white blood cells known as natural killer (NK) cells to attack. They discovered that rituximab tended to stick to one side of the cancer cell, forming a cap and drawing a number of proteins over to that side. It effectively created a front and back to the cell -- with a cluster of protein molecules massed on one side.

But what surprised the scientists most was how this changed the effectiveness of natural killer cells in destroying these diseased cells. When the NK cell latched onto the rituximab cap on the B cell, it had an 80% success rate at killing the cell. In contrast, when the B cell lacked this cluster of proteins on one side, it was killed only 40% of the time.

Professor Davis says: "These results were really unexpected. It was only possible for us to unravel the mystery of why this drug was so effective, through the use of video microscopy. By watching what happened within the cells we could clearly identify just why rituximab is such an effective drug -- because it tended to reorganise the cancerous cell and make it especially prone to being killed."

He continues: "What our findings demonstrate is that this ability to polarise a cell by moving proteins within it should be taken into consideration when new antibodies are being tested as potential treatments for cancer cells. It appears that they can be up to twice as effective if they bind to a cell and reorganise it."

The findings from this study have been published online today on the website of the journal Blood. The research was carried out in collaboration with MedImmune, the global biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca.

Commenting on the research Dr Matt Sleeman, Senior Director of Biology at MedImmune said: "Not only is this a great observation that can influence how we as a biotech company identify and design future therapies, it also shows the innovative 'out of the box' thinking that can be achieved by working in close partnership with academics at the top of their field. This unique partnership, bringing together industry and academia, demonstrates a real catalyst of scientific change within the UK, and I am excited by the potential of the MCCIR to bring further innovation that could ultimately bring benefit to patients."

Much of the research for this study was carried out during Professor Davis' time at Imperial College London. He will be continuing to use high quality video imaging at a microscopic level to investigate immunology at the MCCIR.

Professor Davis and MedImmune would like to acknowledge the funding they received from the Medical Research Council which helped make this study possible.

Liver disease: New studies demonstrates lethal link between alcohol, weight

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Research announced today at the International Liver CongressTM 2013 has revealed the deadly impact that alcohol and body weight have on liver disease.

Women should forgo the wine and doughnuts after a new study found the harmful combination of high alcohol intake and high body mass index (BMI) causes an increased risk of chronic liver disease. The study analysed a cohort of over 107,000 women to investigate how a female's weight and alcohol consumption affected their chances of suffering and dying from chronic liver disease.

EASL's Scientific Committee Member Dr. Daniele Prati said this research involved a large study to investigate the combined influence of a person's alcoholic intake and BMI on the liver.

Dr. Prati said: "It's well known that alcohol and a person's weight are major causes of chronic liver disease however there has been a need for a large population study to compare these factors' influences on each other. Interestingly, the research found the combination of a woman's drinking habits and weight has an important effect on liver health and life expectancy."

More than 107,000 women across the United Kingdom who took part in the study were classed with a low or high BMI (<25 or ? 25) and a low or high alcohol intake (between 0-15 or over 15 units per week). BMI is a measure for human body shape based on an individual's weight and height, with people scoring ? 25 classified as overweight. The study found risk was significantly increased in the group of women with a high BMI and high alcohol intake, with these participants more likely to suffer from chronic liver disease.

Dr. Prati explained: "These findings will have a significant impact on how we can help millions of people across the world at risk of developing liver disease. Women are at particular risk as they are twice as sensitive as men to alcohol related liver damage and developing a more severe form of the disease at lower doses with shorter durations of alcohol consumption. Based on this research we know that a person with low BMI and high alcoholic intake have a greater risk of developing chronic liver disease compared to a woman with a high BMI who doesn't drink very much. More research is required to determine the exact thresholds for each risk factor that independently and in combination increase the risk of chronic liver disease but this is an important first step in the right direction."

Other new research released at the congress showcased a strong link between the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in alcoholic cirrhosis patients and metabolic fatty liver disease. The study found that patients with alcoholic cirrhosis who also have fatty liver disease and are overweight, obese or type 2 diabetic are more likely to develop HCC.

The research examined 100 patients who received transplants for alcoholic end stage liver disease to analyse the impact of both fatty liver and metabolic risk factors such as obesity and type 2 diabetes on the development of HCC in patients.

The results showed more patients with HCC had been frequently overweight (54% compared to 14% of non-HCC patients) or diabetic (43% compared to 22% of non-HCC patients). Half (50%) of patients who had fatty liver disease and were overweight, obese or had type 2 diabetes were found to have HCC compared to just 6% of patients with HCC without these other conditions.

Dr. Prati commented: "Fatty liver and alcohol have long been known as risk factors for HCC but this study tested their combined effect in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. These findings show patients suffering from alcoholic cirrhosis who also have a history of fatty liver disease, obesity or type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of developing liver cancer. The results will be useful to improve the management of patients with cirrhosis, and to identify cancer at early stages."

Worldwide, HCC accounts for approximately 5.4% of all cancers and causes 695,000 deaths per year, including 47,000 deaths in Europe per annum.

Europe has the highest rate of alcohol consumption in the world with one in seven adults consuming more than the recommended average daily amount.

Exclusive: Verizon eyes roughly $100 billion bid for Vodafone's wireless stake

By Soyoung Kim and Kate Holton

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - Verizon Communications has hired advisers to prepare a possible $100 billion bid to take full control of Verizon Wireless from its partner Vodafone, two people familiar with the matter said.

The two sources said Verizon was considering a 50:50 cash and stock bid for the 45 percent stake it does not already own, an asset it has long coveted but that Vodafone will take some persuading to give up. It has not put a proposal to Vodafone yet but has hired both banking and legal advisers for a possible offer, the sources said.

Vodafone investors and analysts said the $100 billion figure was too low and more of an opening gambit to bring the British firm to the table. Shares in Vodafone, the world's second largest mobile operator, were up 2.6 percent at 198 pence.

"I'd be delighted with $135 billion, but there's absolutely no way it will be $100 billion," one top 40 Vodafone investor said on condition of anonymity. "The guidance I have had from someone close to the company is that they are looking at $125-130 billion."

Verizon, which has made little secret of its wish to buy out its British partner from the biggest U.S. mobile operator, has ramped up the pressure in recent months, saying publicly that it believed it could buy the asset in a tax-efficient way.

The two sides have previously held high-level talks to discuss options that ranged from a stake sale to a full merger and how any deal could avoid incurring a possible $20 billion capital gains tax for Vodafone, another person familiar with the situation has told Reuters.

The two sources who spoke to Reuters late on Wednesday said any deal would be structured such that the eventual tax bill would likely be $5 billion or less.

The two sources said Verizon was now ready to push more aggressively. It hopes to start discussions with Vodafone soon for a friendly agreement but is prepared to take a bid public if the British company does not engage, one of the sources added.

"I don't really see this as a surprise," one of Vodafone's 15 largest investors told Reuters, on condition of anonymity. "The talk about this deal has been quite intense recently.

"They should look to return a large amount to shareholders, retaining a relatively small amount for deleveraging and bolt-on deals. I don't think shareholders would be pleased with Vodafone viewing any disposal proceeds as an acquisition war chest."

Vodafone Chief Executive Vittorio Colao has so far said he has an open mind on whether to sell the group's 45 percent stake, which has come to make up around 75 percent of the firm's value in recent years as its core European business suffered.

Some analysts believe the Italian, who has won praise for his dealmaking in almost five years at the top of the group, could try to hold on to the asset for a little longer, until he sees some sign that his core European businesses are starting to stabilize.

But Colao will also know that the U.S. market could become more competitive due to a wave of consolidation, so he could decide that it might soon be the right time to walk away.

"The tax problem has always been the issue. If a way can be found around that, then it is highly likely that a deal will be done," the top-15 investor said.

Another way to avoid the tax issue would be for the two parent groups to merge, but Verizon said earlier this month that it was not looking to buy or merge with its partner.

Verizon, which is benefiting from record low interest rates as well as its own strong stock price, is instead confident that the company can raise about $50 billion of bank financing, the sources said. It plans to pay for the rest of the deal with its own shares, they added. The sources asked not to be named because the discussions are confidential.

BOARD ACTIVITY

Verizon's board is expected to discuss details of a potential Verizon Wireless buyout next week at a regularly scheduled meeting being held ahead of the company's annual shareholder meeting, one of the sources said.

Verizon spokesman Bob Varettoni declined to comment, but pointed to the U.S. telephone company's statement earlier this month, in which it said it would be a willing buyer of Vodafone's share of their Verizon Wireless venture.

Vodafone declined to comment.

Analysts have said a sale of Verizon Wireless would enable Vodafone to return cash to shareholders, purchase fixed-line assets in Europe or potentially make the company an attractive takeover target for other telecom giants such as AT&T Inc.

Shares in Vodafone have risen 26 percent this year on speculation that it could finally be ready to sell its stake, but most analysts had put the value of the Vodafone holding at nearer $120 billion.

Taking full ownership would give Verizon, which is reliant on the unit for growth, a lot more flexibility with the cash generated from the wireless business.

Analyst Jonathan Chaplin at New Street Research, said a deal at $100 billion would boost Verizon's earnings per share in 2014 by 33 percent.

"We doubt that Vodafone management or shareholders would be willing to sell for $100 billion; however, this is a good starting point for negotiations," he said in a note. "We believe a deal could be struck that would create significant value for both sets of shareholders."

Verizon came close to doing a deal in 2004, when Vodafone tried to buy AT&T Wireless but lost the auction to Cingular. That deal would have allowed Vodafone to bring its brand across the Atlantic and would have required it to sell its 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless.

Any deal now, if it were to happen, would come at a time when the telecommunications industry is undergoing a fresh round of consolidation activity. MetroPCS Communications Inc shareholders voted on Wednesday to approve a merger with No.4 U.S. wireless service provider T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG.

An earlier attempt by Deutsche Telekom to sell T-Mobile to AT&T for $39 billion in 2011 was blocked by U.S. antitrust regulators. Verizon would be unlikely to face any such obstacles in a Verizon Wireless buyout.

Meanwhile, Dish Network Corp, the No.2 U.S. satellite TV provider, last week offered to buy wireless service provider Sprint Nextel Corp for $25.5 billion in cash and stock, challenging a proposed deal between Sprint and Japan's SoftBank Corp.

Verizon's shares have risen about 20 percent so far this year as Wireless has been easily outperforming its smaller rivals in terms of profitability and customer growth, and on rising hopes of a buyout.

Verizon shares are valued at 17.9 times forward earnings, compared with 11.8 for Vodafone.

Jeb Bush Is Cleaning Out His Closet for 2016

Have enough Americans forgiven George W. Bush that they'll vote for his brother for president??Jeb Bush is doing several things that indicate he thinks so. He gave a speech in Dallas Wednesday titled "Restoring America's Promise: The Leadership Required and the Policy Changes that are Needed." He wrote a book about immigration reform. He's giving speeches about education. Oh, and he's getting potentially embarrassing news out of the way. Bush's maid was deported in 1991, The Washington Post's Manuel Roig-Franzia and Peter Wallsten report Wednesday. "It was a difficult time for all of us, but most of all for Maria," Bush told the newspaper.

RELATED: The 2016 Guessing Game Needs to End

Bush and his wife Columba could not stop the deportation, even though Bush's dad was president at the time, the?Post reports. Jeb Jr. was just 10, and didn't know she was deported. "I thought she just left," Jeb Jr. says. The Post is clear about what Bush's experience means: "While Republicans cast about for leaders who can connect with Spanish-speaking voters, this tall Texas native with the Mexican American wife has remarkably come to represent a kind of Hispanic consciousness for the party."?Bush has experience with bigotry. When his son was playing a baseball game in seventh grade, someone in the stands yelled out a slur for Hispanic. "His skin is darker, because my wife is from Mexico," Bush said at a 1998 campaign stop. "He has been discriminated against... This was my family. There is hatred out there."

RELATED: Let's Talk About a Potential Bush in 2016

Earlier this month, George W. Bush told?Parade magazine, "I hope he will run."?Politico's Anna Palmer reports that Bush has the things he needs to be elected president: "money, r?sum? and connections." Alas, "he's also got a problem: his last name." Former Republican National Committee chair Haley Barbour said, "I would put it this way ? if Jeb's last name was Brown instead of Bush, he?d probably be the front-runner for the Republican nomination." The idea that the only thing holding Bush back is his name has been around since at least 2007, and has been?repeated?many?times. But if Bush's last name were Brown, we probably would have never heard of him. In 1994, the?Palm Beach Post?complained that Bush's "political?r?sum??begins and ends with his last name." Will he run in 2016? Bush said Wednesday, "To be honest with you, I'm focused on the land commissioner race in 2014." That would be the race featuring his son, George P. Bush, who will be in attendance at the dedication of the?George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas Thursday ? along with his brother, his father, and President Obama, as well as former President Bill Clinton... and his wife.

Samsung?s enterprise ambitions put on hold as KNOX security software delayed

MADRID, April 25 (Reuters) - Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina said the 10-match ban given to his team mate Luis Suarez for biting an opponent was 'absurd' and 'excessive'. Uruguay international Suarez was punished on Wednesday by the English Football Association (FA) after he bit the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at the weekend. "He knows he is in the wrong, and that it was a mistake, but the 10-game punishment seems absurd to me, excessive and unfair," Spanish international Reina was quoted as telling radio station Cadena Cope by sports daily AS on Thursday. ...

BlackBerry Q10 review

DNP BlackBerry Q10 review

You can't please everybody all the time, and if there's a company who knows this better than the rest, it's BlackBerry. At the showy launch for BlackBerry 10, the company finally unveiled its new stable of smartphones with which it would fight the likes of Apple, Samsung, HTC, Microsoft, Nokia and Google. No simple task, that, and so BlackBerry rolled out not one, but two weapons: the all-touch Z10 and the portrait-QWERTY Q10.

But there was a catch: only one would launch at a time. It was a staged attack, with the Z10 forming the initial volley. This, many said, was a mistake, and that the Q10 and its familiar physical keyboard should have gone first, paving the way for the more radical, all-touch Z10. After what seems like an eternity, the $249 BlackBerry Q10 is finally ready for duty, so let's put it through its paces and see which of these fraternal twins is truly the flagship.

Discovery of new genes will help childhood arthritis treatment

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Scientists from The University of Manchester have identified 14 new genes which could have important consequences for future treatments of childhood arthritis. Scientists Dr Anne Hinks, Dr Joanna Cobb and Professor Wendy Thomson, from the University's Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit, whose work is published in Nature Geneticsyesterday, looked at DNA extracted from blood and saliva samples of 2,000 children with childhood arthritis and compared these to healthy people.

Principal Investigator Professor Thomson, who also leads the Inflammatory Arthritis in Children theme at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Manchester Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, said: "This study brought together an international group of scientists from around the world and is the largest investigation into the genetics of childhood arthritis to date."

Childhood arthritis affects one in 1,000 in the UK. It is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental risk factors, however until recently very little was known about the genes that are important in developing this disease ? only three were previously known.

Dr Hinks, joint lead author of the study, said the findings were significant for understanding more about the biology of the disease and this might help identify novel therapies for the disease. "Childhood arthritis, also known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), is a specific type of arthritis quite separate from types found in adults and there's been only a limited amount of research into this area in the past," she said. "This study set out to look for specific risk factors. To identify these 14 genetic risk factors is quite a big discovery. It will help us to understand what's causing the condition, how it progresses and then to potentially develop new therapies."

The study may help to predict which children need specific treatment earlier and allow health workers to better control their pain management, quality of life and long-term outcome. Currently 30 per cent of children with the disease continue to suffer from arthritis in adulthood.

Dr Cobb, joint lead author, added: "There are lots of different forms of childhood arthritis so identifying the markers will help us understand a little bit more about the disease process. It will also help to categorise children with JIA into sub-types dependent on which genes they have and allow us to determine the best course of treatment."

The study which took two years to complete, will ultimately help clinicians to better manage children with the disease and give potential to develop new therapies.

Professor Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK who part funded the work, said: "We have known for some time that there is a strong genetic contribution to a child's risk of developing JIA, however previously only three genetic risk factors had been identified. This study is the largest genetic investigation of JIA to date and has identified 14 new risk regions, adding a significant amount to our knowledge of the genetic basis of this disorder. Further work is now required to investigate each of these regions in more detail, to enable us to understand how they are involved in disease development and identify potential new therapeutic targets."

RI lawmakers to vote on gay marriage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? State lawmakers in Rhode Island could decide whether the nation's smallest state becomes the 10th to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Following months of review and debate, the state Senate is set to vote on gay marriage legislation Wednesday afternoon. The bill easily passed the House in January and has the support of independent Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

Gay marriage legislation has been introduced in Rhode Island's General Assembly for nearly two decades only to languish on the legislative agenda. Heavily Catholic Rhode Island is now the only state in New England that does not allow same-sex couples to marry. Gay marriage is law in nine states and the District of Columbia.

Wednesday's vote comes after the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7-4 Tuesday to forward the legislation to the Senate floor. Dozens of supporters cheered and cried following the vote. Ken Fish, a 70-year-old gay man from Warwick, said he watched the committee vote with a mixture of disbelief and elation.

"It's almost unreal to think we're here, after all these years," he said. "I wasn't sure we'd ever get here."

If the bill passes the Senate it must return to the House for a largely procedural vote on small changes made to the bill on the Senate side. House Speaker Gordon Fox, D-Providence, said a final vote could come as early as next week.

Support for the bill has grown since it passed the House in January. On Tuesday, the Senate's five Republicans announced they would all support the legislation, further improving the bill's chances.

"We've got one more step, but I expect it to pass with overwhelming support," said Sen. Dawson Hodgson, R-North Kingstown.

Opponents aren't giving up on efforts to turn back the legislation. Sen. Harold Metts, D-Providence, said he planned to fast and pray ahead of Wednesday's debate.

"Culture may change, but God has an immutable character," he said. "I'll be praying all night."

Chafee encouraged supporters to contact their senators ahead of the vote but signaled that he thinks the bill will pass, saying in a statement that "I believe that when the roll is called, marriage equality will become law in Rhode Island."

The Senate has long been seen as the true test for gay marriage in Rhode Island. Two years ago, gay marriage legislation languished after it became apparent it would be defeated in the Senate. Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, D-Newport, opposes the bill but has vowed not to obstruct debate.

The Rhode Island legislation states that religious institutions may set their own rules for who is eligible to marry within their faith and specifies that no religious leader is obligated to officiate at any marriage ceremony. While ministers already cannot be forced to marry anyone, the exemption helped assuage concerns from some lawmakers that clergy could face lawsuits for abiding by their religious convictions.
