Ways by which a Landscaping Expert Can Keep Out Weeds and Other

Lawn maintenance needs certain talents, expertise, and above all, patience. It is not always the easiest thing to maintain your lawn no matter its size--it's an undertaking best left to pros. Nevertheless, no matter how much maintenance you give your back yard, some complications often tend to sneak up on it without your knowledge. Weeds are a remarkably clear and all too persistent illustration of this sad fact.

The more extensive your lawn, the more care it should get--and the more troubles you may disregard. These issues always go undetected at the beginning, yet if left alone, they can ruin all your labors in as little as two seasons. Here are some of the most common things you need to prevent.

Crab Grass

The most problematic thing about crab grass is that it spreads its branches in all directions parallel to the ground. Its wider-bladed leaves tend to splay over the more slender and thinner lawn grass, robbing it of sunlight. Florida receives increased doses of sunlight than the more northern states; thus, lawn grass here is a lot more dependent on sunlight, making crab grass a considerable risk.

Pulling them out separately could prove effective for a couple of stalks of crab grass, yet when they've taken over the whole area, it's practically an exercise in futility to get rid of them effectively this way. This is when a qualified landscaping contractor can assist you. They use certain herbicides that are usually administered throughout spring.

Bare Places.

A lot of factors may produce bald patches on your yard: weeds, insects, dog pee, and, inadequate maintenance all contribute to it. No matter the source, a Boca Raton landscaping expert highly recommends dealing with it without delay to prevent it from spreading and afflicting other regions. For example, if the bare spots are the result of weed infestation, then you should uproot them first before you could start reseeding.

Thatch

According to reputable Coral Springs landscaping professionals in Florida, thatch is one more yard maintenance trouble that may often affect your yard. This is a brownish low-growing plant, the result of heavily fertilized and quickly grown grass. You can address this problem by yourself, or you can hire a landscaping company who will probably operate a grass aerator to get rid of all traces of dead turf.

Like it or not, your lawn somehow mirrors your perspective toward cleanliness as well as upkeep. Consequently, it has a considerable effect on the visitors' initial impressions of you. If your yard is being overrun by unwelcome plants, it's probably time to employ the services of a Weston landscaping company. To find out more relating to the most common lawn problems, you can visit ehow.com.

Void Century

Different times, different pasts, different technology, different things, all of them meet together, not knowing how, where, or when it happened, because everything is happening at once.

From different generations across the world, different people of different ages and genders come together, nothing in common, these people group together to find a mystery of what had happened in the past, or is it the future?
One thing they know though, someone brought them together, not knowing who. But how? When? and why...?

Finding themselves in Chicago, separate places, the city that had tall buildings and plenty of people, became but ruins and nothingness. One finds newspapers talking about the end of the world. One finds a letter, explaining there was an empty space in the past called the 'Void Century' which contained of three hundred years, where no one knew what had had happened. All the letter said, was they needed to find out what had happened in this past. The rest of these people, scattered, look around what used to be Chicago, for any other people.

They slowly group together, finding these monsters which were obviously mutants, with intellects just as good as humans, they had to hide from and fight. How do they survive this horrifying century? Are there any other humans living? And how do they get out? And who is the culprit who put them there in the first place? Most of all, who created these mutants in the first place and destroyed this city?

LEGION BASEBALL: Anastasio lifts East Haven past Shelton

Shore Line Sports Writer

EAST HAVEN ? East Haven got an enormous lift from their ace pitcher Michael Anastasio in a 5-0 win over Shelton last Sunday at East Haven High School.

Anastasio allowed just three hits while striking out six. He also went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI single.

''We came out and played as a team,'' said Anastasio. ''We hit the ball, had timely hitting, and we played good defense. My velocity was up today, and my curve ball and change-up looked good. I tried to mix it up all day to keep them off-balance. It was a good effort.''

Kyle Lockery paced East Haven?s offensive attack by going 2-for-2 with a single, double, and two RBIs.

The 89ers' loaded the bases in the first inning as Gary Flowers and Zack Korwek worked the count in their favor to earn walks, while Nick Lamberti and Andrew Hinckley scored for a quick 2-0 lead.

Lamberti went 2-for-3 with a single, double, a stolen base and two runs scored in this Zone II contest.

''Nick is a spark plug,? said East Haven coach Joe Pelliccia.

Shelton had a few golden opportunities to capitalize with runners in scoring position, but Anastasio?s pitching prowess and the Easties? defense prevailed in big spots.

''We have a lot of confidence and if you get pitching, it?s the name of the game,'' Pelliccia added. Continued...

Mike Ferro went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles for Shelton (4-3).

?We had some pretty good swings on the ball, and drove some balls very well,? said Shelton coach Fred Kelley. ?Sometimes you just have to tip your cap.?

Anastasio's counterpart, Jeremy Soderholm, walked two and struck out four.

''I thought Jeremy's change-up was very effective,? Kelly added. ?His change-up had a lot of bite in it, and kept them off balance to get some good hitters out. East Haven swings the bats very well. I was impressed with their hitting.?

The 89ers improved to 4-3.

''Hopefully, we start to get on a roll, and get on a winning streak and go from there,? Pelliccia said. ?I would like to see a little more hits with runners on base.?

University of Tokyo builds a soap bubble 3D screen, guarantees your display stays squeaky clean video

There are waterfall screens, but what if you'd like your display to be a little more... pristine? Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a display that hits soap bubbles with ultrasonic sound to change the surface. At a minimum, it can change how light glances off the soap film to produce the image. It gets truly creative when taking advantage of the soap's properties: a single screen is enough to alter the texture of a 2D image, and multiple screens in tandem can create what amounts to a slightly sticky hologram. As the soap is made out of sturdy colloids rather than the easily-burst mixture we all knew as kids, users won't have to worry about an overly touch-happy colleague popping a business presentation. There's a video preview of the technology after the jump; we're promised a closer look at the technology during the SIGGRAPH expo in August, but we don't yet know how many years it will take to find sudsy screens in the wild.

Study finds genes associated with hippocampal atrophy

Thursday, June 28, 2012

In a genome-wide association (GWA) study, researchers from Boston University Schools of Medicine (BUSM) and Public Health (BUSPH) have identified several genes which influence degeneration of the hippocampus, the part of the brain most associated with Alzheimer disease (AD). The study, which currently appears online as a Rapid Communication in the Annals of Neurology, demonstrates the efficacy of endophenotypes for broadening the understanding of the genetic basis of and pathways leading to AD.

AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder for which there are no prevention methods. Available drugs only marginally affect disease severity and progression, making AD effectively untreatable.

GWA studies using very large samples have increased the number of robust associations to 10 genes, including APOE. However, these genes account for no more than 35 percent of the inherited risk of AD and most of the genetic underpinning of the disorder remains unexplained. According to the researchers, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain provides in vivo quantitative measures of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular brain injury that may represent AD-related changes long before clinical symptoms appear. These measures are more powerful than comparisons of individuals with AD with cognitively healthy persons because they avoid misclassification of normal persons who will develop disease in the future.

BUSM researchers conducted a two-stage GWA study for quantitative measures of hippocampal volume (HV), total cerebral volume (TCV) and white matter hyperintensities (WMH). Brain MRI measures of HV, TCV and WMH were obtained from 981 Caucasian and 419 African-American AD cases and their cognitively normal siblings in the MIRAGE (Multi Institutional Research in Alzheimer's Genetic Epidemiology) Study. In addition, similar MRI measures were obtained from 168 AD cases, 336 individuals with mild cognitive impairment and 188 controls (all Caucasian) in the AD Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) Study. The MIRAGE Caucasian families and ADNI subjects were included in the first stage and the MIRAGE African American families were added in stage two. Results from the two Caucasians data sets were combined by meta-analysis.

In stage two, one genetic marker (i.e. single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP) from each of the gene regions that were most significantly associated with AD in the Caucasian data sets was evaluated in the African-American data set.

Novel genome-wide significant associations were observed for HV with SNPs in the APOE, F5/SELP, LHFP, and GCFC2 gene regions. All of these associations were supported by evidence in each data set.

"Our two-stage GWAS identified highly significant associations between a measure of degeneration in the brain region most strongly correlated with AD and several genes in both Caucasian and African American samples containing AD, cognitively impaired and cognitively healthy subjects. One of these associations was with the ?4 variant of APOE which is the most well-established genetic risk factor for AD.

Other associations were demonstrated with markers in F5/SELP, LHFP, and GCFC2, genes not previously implicated in this disease" explained senior author Lindsay Farrer, PhD, chief of biomedical genetics at BUSM. He also noted, "previous studies showed that blood level of P-selectin (the protein encoded by SELP) has been correlated with rate of cognitive decline in AD patients."

Farrer believes it is very likely that the number and specificity of these associations will increase in future studies using larger samples and focused on additional precise structural and functional MRI measures. "These findings will inform experiments designed to increase our understanding of disease-causing mechanism and may lead to new therapeutics targets," added Farrer.

HTC One V quietly pops up at Virgin Mobile USA for $200, iPhone tags along for online orders

HTC had broadcast its intentions to bring the One V to the US this summer, and that's exactly what it's doing, even if it's keeping the formalities to a minimum. Virgin Mobile has started selling the entry Android 4.0 phone without fanfare at a very tempting $200 contract-free -- certainly the lowest American price we've seen so far for joining the Sense 4.0 party. The hardware still won't floor anyone, but Virgin Mobile Live is tossed in to perk up the experience. Should Google's platform just not be your bag, you'll also be glad to know that Virgin has recently started taking online orders for its prepaid iPhones, which officially hit the shops on Friday. With their $550 and $650 no-contract prices, though, some may question just how Retina their displays really need to be.

[Thanks, Marcus]

Robot beats humans at rock-paper-scissors every time

Sara Reardon, reporter

The robot wars have begun, and no matter how fast you choose your weapon - rock, paper, or scissors - the robot will beat you every time.

The three-fingered robotic hand developed by Ishikawa Oku's lab at the University of Tokyo has a dirty secret: it cheats. A high-speed video camera runs at over 1000 frames per second and watches your wrist and fingers as you begin to form the shape. The robot's visual recognition program needs only one millisecond to figure out which shape your hand will take, and choose the one that will beat you.

When the human player in the video above tries to change his shape at the last minute, it still can't fool the robot at the game, which is called janken in Japan. Its timing is so precise that it never shows its hand too early, and it wins 100 per cent of the time.

This kind of high speed vision may have a more practical use than arming robots so they'll always get to bat first at robot baseball. Robots can recognize speech in real time by the forms the human mouth takes, cooperate with humans performing precision tasks that take two, and maybe intervene in an accident before it happens. The janken game is an early example of what Oku's lab calls "meta-perception": the Sherlock Holmes-like ability of machines to pick up information humans would miss.

Stocks up on U.S. data, oil; euro slips pre-summit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose on major world markets on Wednesday after encouraging U.S. data and a rally in crude oil prices, but the euro slipped ahead of a European summit seen as unlikely to produce a credible solution to the region's debt crisis.

Wall Street stocks logged their largest gain in a week, with the S&P 500 index rising nearly 1.0 percent. The rally came after data showed demand for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods rose sharply more than expected in May and U.S. pending home sales hit a two-year high.

On commodity markets, U.S. crude oil prices recovered to above $80 (51.3 pounds) per barrel and Brent crude in London erased early losses as a strike by Norwegian oil workers dragged on.

The rally in oil helped accelerate gains in U.S. stocks, with shares of energy firms among the biggest gainers.

While investors welcomed the rebound, few had illusions about the market's long-term trend as the euro zone crisis rumbled on without a solution.

"Sentiment is pretty negative - when you get people this depressed markets have a tendency to bounce and that is pretty much where we are at right now," said Doug Foreman, director of equities at Kayne Anderson Rudnick Investment Management, an affiliated manager of Virtus Investment Partners in Los Angeles, California.

European Union leaders remained unusually divided ahead of the two-day summit beginning Thursday over how to stem the bloc's spreading debt crisis, now in its third year.

EUROPEAN LEADERS AT ODDS

Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund with $120 billion in assets, doubts Germany will back off its tough austerity stand at the upcoming EU summit in Brussels.

"For this reason, we think the popular assumption that the Germans and the ECB (which requires agreement of the key factions within it) will come through with the money to make all these debts good should not be taken for granted," the fund said in its daily market note. "This 'fat tail' event must be considered a significant possibility."

Indeed, on the eve of the EU summit German Chancellor Angela Merkel brushed aside increasingly shrill calls from Spain and Italy for emergency action to lower their soaring borrowing costs.

"I fear that at the summit we will talk too much about all these ideas for joint liability and too little about improved controls and structural measures," she said, renewing her mantra that Germany, Europe's strongest economy, should not be overburdened.

At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 92.34 points, or 0.74 percent, at 12,627.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 11.86 points, or 0.90 percent, at 1,331.85. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 21.26 points, or 0.74 percent, at 2,875.32.

European shares also rallied on the upbeat U.S. data, closing up 1.4 percent for their largest gain since June 19.

The MSCI world equity index rose 0.9 percent, though it remained down week-to-date.

The euro edged lower, slipping against the U.S. dollar for a third straight day as it traded 0.2 percent down at $1.2467.

Growing concerns that more peripheral euro zone nations will be shut out from capital markets and expectations that fiscal austerity will drag the region into a more painful recession will see the euro stay under pressure. Any bounce toward the $1.27 or $1.28 level would attract sellers, traders said.

"I am going short euro/dollar into the summit," said Stuart Frost, head of absolute returns and currency at RWC Capital, a London-based fund manager. "The euro should be a lot lower than what it is and even if there is an agreement, chances of which are very low, the currency is headed towards $1.20."

EURO BONDS

Debt markets continued to reflect the worsening funding outlook for many euro zone nations, with investors reluctant to increase their exposure even to safe-haven debt ahead of the leaders' summit.

Italy's six-month borrowing costs rose to 2.957 percent at auction on Wednesday, their highest since December. The spike comes just ahead of a five- and 10-year debt sale for up to 5.5 billion euros on Thursday. On Tuesday, Spain saw its short-term borrowing costs nearly triple.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 2/32, its yield at 1.6211 percent.

Markets had been hoping this week's summit would deliver at least a high-level agreement on greater fiscal and financial integration across the euro area that could then ultimately lead to the issuance of common euro bonds.

"It is slightly different than what we saw before other summits in the past when hopes were quite high," said Norbert Wuthe, senior government bond strategist at Bayerische Landesbank. "Now we are disappointed going into the summit and there is a positive surprise potential."

Stress-Induced Depression Is Real [Science]

Stress breeds depression. Anecdotally, we all know that's the case, but scientifically speaking it's been a hypothesis that has until now remained unproven. A new study, however, reveals that chronic stress affects us at the genetic level, in turn creating very real brain changes associated with depression. More »

Google reveals pint-sized Nexus 7 tablet for just $199

The tablet, manufactured by Asus, runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Google revealed its long-rumored device today ? a?7-inch Nexus tablet running Android's newest operating system flavor, 4.1 Jelly Bean. The pint-sized slate ? which the company showed off at its annual Google I/O keynote event ? is manufactured by Asus, known for making other Android tablets including the Transformer and the Transformer Prime.

The device has a 1280 x 800-pixel high-definition display, made with reading and watching videos in mind. It has a speedy Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor under the hood, front-facing camera for video chat, 9 hours of video playback ? compared to the iPad's 10-hour playback life ? and 300 hours of standby battery time. The tablet weighs 340 grams, which is about as much as a paperback book. Check out our hands-on gallery with the Nexus 7 for all the eye candy.

It features tighter integration with Google Play, with content being front and center, similar to how the Amazon Kindle Fire functions. Due to this, Google Play now has a new 3D magazine app with tablet-optimized articles that render well on the Nexus 7's screen.

Nexus 7 will also be the first device that ships with Chrome as its native browser?? Chrome, despite being Google's browser, hasn't been available on Android until a beta version of it was introduced for Ice Cream Sandwich devices.?Google has also overhauled Google Maps with additional information and review features which can predict which restaurants you'll likely enjoy. Offline maps will also be a hotly sought-after feature, and now that Apple and Microsoft are touting similar features, it's an important bullet point to have.

Pre-orders for the teensy Google Nexus 7 tablet begins today. You can order the new tablet from the?Google Play store with two price tiers ? $199 for the 8GB model and 16GB version ? making it a true Kindle Fire competitor. It will start shipping in mid July. The Kindle Fire lands at a similar price point, but with its apps governed largely by what Amazon declares suitable for its shop, the Nexus 7 will have everything the Fire has, and then some. Despite some similar hardware specs ? screen size, screen resolution, etc ? the Nexus will offer a faster processor and a much more genuine Android experience from a software standpoint.

Google is clearly making a play for potential iPad customers with this sleek, streamlined device, and with a price tag of less than half of the base model Apple tablet, the company may have a real shot at success. $499 gets you a 16GB iPad with a 9.7-inch Retina display, but if ultra-sharp screen resolution and playing in the Apple universe aren't a big deal, the 7-inch Nexus slate will be much easier on your pocketbook.

Of course, it's unclear how Microsoft's Surface device will shake up the consumer tablet market. With a physical keyboard and Windows 8-esque software design, it seems like Android and iOS devotees will already have their minds made up between the iPad and the Nexus 7.

U.S. Civil War Era Fantasy RP?

I'm looking for a partner who has some knowledge of the U.S. Civil War era, preferably in the Southern region specifically. You don't have to be an expert, but a working background would be nice. I always wanted to create a long-term fantasy RP in the Antebellum period through Reconstruction. When I think of the South during the Civil War, I always think of vampires, but I'm open to ideas. A visit to Charleston has inspired me to write about the time period and I'd love some company! I prefer male writing partners as I am a female, but again, I'm open to ideas. As long as you are able to coherently string words together and contribute to the story, I am happy. Please let me know if you'd be interested either via reply or private message. Thanks!

Muscle building shakes ? your source for perfect nutrition

There is one way you can build those super muscles - rigorous exercising. One of the best ways to build muscles is to do intensive weight training exercise. But when you are into such intensive weight training you also need muscle building nutrition. Many people will tell you that weight training rips the muscles a bit and they get back to shape when they get adequate nutrition. One of the best ways to get your muscles back in shape and to make them bulkier is to go for muscle building shakes.

?

Proteins are the ones that give you proper muscle building nutrition. Where do you find proteins? You find proteins in various food items like fish, eggs, meat and poultry among other things. But is the amount of protein available in these items enough for your muscles? They are not because you need 1.5 grams of protein for each pound of your body weight. To get that kind of protein you need something special, something that has enough protein packed in a small quantity of that special food. Muscle building shakes offer you enormous amounts of protein in each spoonful.

?

There are thousands of brands in muscle building nutrition that you can buy online. Sometimes it is very difficult to decide which one to buy. It is said that the best muscle building food items are those that are rich in whey protein. Whey protein is a by-product of cheese production and is considered to be one of the best sources of protein. You may also want to look at casein protein, egg protein and soy protein among other items. All these proteins are available as muscle building shakes.

?

Can muscle building shakes replace your meals? They cannot and this is why they are known as supplements. When you are into heavy weight training you must consume adequate food. You can eat anything that is healthy - fruits and vegetables, pulses and breads, meat and fish and so on. It is important for you to remember that you need to eat within 15 to 20 minutes of waking up and then need to eat at an interval of every 2 to 3 hours. But you don't feel like stuffing up every 2 to 3 hours and hence you can use muscle building nutrition in the form of shakes. These shakes are very tasty and provide your body with the right amount of proteins, vitamins, pro hormones, glutamines and everything else you need for building those solid muscles.

?

Of course there are other items in muscle building nutrition than muscle building shakes. Muscle building supplements are also available in the form of gels, bars and bites. You can buy anything that suits your purpose. But shakes are the most convenient to have because you just need to mix the powder in milk and sip it up.

?

Whether you consume muscle building shakes or any other item for your muscle building nutrition, it is important that you give your body adequate nutrition. This is the only way to build muscles.

Detroit+Lions+v+Green+Bay+Packers+ABaVfN6_AjZlGetty Images

Cornerback Alphonso Smith doesn?t care whether the Lions are trying to trade him, and he won?t care until they do.

Smith, picked by the Broncos in the second round of the 2009 draft after Denver shipped a 2010 first-rounder to Seattle, was sent to Detroit after only one season for tight end Dan Gronkowski.? Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that the Lions could move Smith in an effort to beef up their secondary.

?Please forgive my frankness,? Smith told Dave Dye of FOXSportsDetroit.com.? ?To be blunt with you, I really didn?t care.? It didn?t happen.? It still may happen.? You never know.

?I don?t care about reports or rumors.? Only thing I can focus on is I?m a Detroit Lion and I?m a Detroit Lion until I?m not.?

His preference would be to continue to wear Honolulu blue.

?I want to be here,? Smith said.? ?I?ve grown a lot with the scheme and the players and the things that the coaches want.? But that decision is way above my pay grade.? My job is to come in and play, not deal in personnel or whether I?m getting traded or not. . . .? Really don?t care.?

Smith does care that he?s in a contract year.? With his first-ever shot at free agency coming in March, he has every reason to play well, regardless of where he ends up playing.

If he stays in Detroit, he may have a chance to play plenty.? He could end up filling the vacancy in the starting lineup created by the departure of Eric Wright via free agency.

?One of the ways I try to separate myself is making plays,? Smith said.? ?As I look around, if you talk about playmakers in the secondary, I?ll probably be the first on that list.? That?s how I separate myself. . . .? Do my job.? Don?t give up any big ones and make plays when it?s there.?

Regardless of whether Smith gets traded, the Lions need someone to not ?give up any big ones? and ?make plays when it?s there? in 2012.? If not, the Lions won?t get any farther than they did in 2011.

Sun exposure and cutaneous HPV infection found synergistic in skin cancers

Monday, June 25, 2012

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg have found that having antibodies for cutaneous types of human papillomavirus (HPV), coupled with sun exposure (ultraviolet radiation) or poor tanning ability, can act "synergistically" in the development of non-melanoma skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

A number of studies into the relationship between cutaneous HPV and sun exposure have been conducted previously but with mixed results, the researchers said.

This study, the first to investigate interaction effects between genus-specific cutaneous HPV positivity and multiple measures of sunlight exposure as related to BCC and SCC in a U.S. population, was published in a recent issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"UV radiation exposure is the most important risk factor for the development of non-melanoma skins cancer," said study lead author Dana E. Rollison, Ph.D., Moffitt associate member, vice president and chief health information officer. "Cases of non-melanoma skin cancers are increasing despite the increased use of sunscreen products. Thus, so that new interventions can be developed, there is a need to identify co-factors that may interact with UV radiation exposure in increasing the skin cancer risk."

According to the authors, the risk factors for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are male sex; age; light skin, eyes and hair; and UV radiation exposure.

UV radiation exposure and light skin pigmentation are the most recognized risk factors. People with low melanin production tend to have difficulty tanning when exposed to UV radiation.

Skin pigmentation, created by chemical melanin production in the skin, is the "main photoprotective mechanism in the skin," noted the researchers.

The researchers hypothesized that persistent HPV infection may promote tumor progression by interfering with an individual's response to UV radiation-induced DNA damage and that HPV plays a synergistic role in the development of BCC and SCC. Accordingly, their goal was to investigate the potential "modifying effects of cutaneous HPV seroreactivity on the associations between sunlight exposure, host susceptibility to UV radiation exposure, and both BCC and SCC."

The study recruited 204 patient volunteers with BCC, 156 with SCC, and 297 controls with no reported cancer types. The three groups were surveyed on demographics, personal constitutional characteristics, lifestyle factors and measurements of sunlight exposure. Each volunteer provided a blood sample for cutaneous HPV antibody measurement.

"Sun-related factors were associated with BCC and SCC," Rollison said. "Cutaneous sensitivity to sunlight exposure - specifically experiencing a blistering sunburn - and poor tanning ability were associated with a higher prevalence of antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genus beta. The associations between poor tanning ability and SCC were significantly greater among those positive for antibodies to cutaneous HPV types in genera alpha and beta."

Additional studies are needed, including those measuring infection with cutaneous HPV types in multiple genera, concluded the researchers.

"Identifying how HPV infections might influence sunlight-associated risks of NMSC may lead to improved identification of high-risk individuals and also aid in the development of new prevention strategies," Rollison said.

Clever bSafe Panic Alarm App Launches In U.S. With Free Offer To New Yorkers

bsafeThe market for 'panic alarm' apps on smartphones is littered with simple apps which just make a lot of noise if you get attacked, but not much else. This is a mistake. Smartphones have cameras, microphones, and can broadcast their location - basically everything you need to turn the phone into the ultimate safety device. So it's surprising that so few startups are addressing this area. One that has been around since 2011 out of Denmark is PanicGuard. The app will sound an alarm, SMS someone, start recording video and track your location. But it's expensive ($6 a month), and is failing to scale outside the UK/Europe. Its main competitor is the bSafe app on iOS and Android from the startup called Bipper. This has now launched a major push into the U.S. with both a free and paid-for model, and a way of using it for more everyday safety. It's this business model which has seen it become the most downloaded mobile safety app in Europe to date, with over 100,000 downloads.

Meizu MX 4-core and Flyme OS 1.0 formally announced, available on June 30th

Meizu MX 4core

Forget that "MX Quad-core" moniker, because Meizu's just formally introduced its first quad-core Android phone as the "MX 4-core" in Hong Kong, an event jam-packed with balloons and local celebrities (we really should've brought our sunglasses). For those who care, this is the first time ever for Meizu to collaborate with a carrier -- that being Hong Kong's PCCW, who's offering the HK$3,099 (US$400) 32GB model for free on various tariffs, while details are light on the HK$4,099 (US$530) 64GB version. Once the stage cleared we had a chance to take a closer look at the international variant of the MX 4-core. Aside from the disappearance of the Chinese logo above the screen plus the duller logo on the back (but accompanied by an extra capacity label), the 4-inch HSPA+ phone looks identical to its dual-core sibling. Additionally, Hong Kong and mainland China customers who pre-order between now and the launch on June 30th will get to pick a colored back crystal shell for free, including ivory white, milky lime, lilac purple and misty pink to replace the original white.

Software-wise Flyme -- Meizu's heavily customized Ice Cream Sandwich -- is also very similar to its Gingerbread predecessor, except for its slicker responsiveness (especially the camera app) and the odd interface tweaks here and there. There are also a few new features that are worth a mention: on top of the new native stopwatch, countdown timer and multi-segmented timed task lists, there's Flyme Voicemail which is essentially a native recorder for incoming calls that you reject (think of it as a neat alternative to conventional visual voicemail), and there's Flyme Message which is Meizu's take on SIP services like Whatsapp and Line. We shall dig deeper in our full review, but for now, you can check out a quick hands-on video after the break. And for those who still possess Meizu's older Android phones, we were told to expect Flyme to be delivered over the air in early July (as opposed to the original June date), so keep an eye out for that little update icon.

Update: We mentioned in our video that the China version of the MX 4-core doesn't come with the Play Store, but it turns out that we were mistaken. Hooray!

Update 2: By the way, it's pronounced "fly-me."

Video: Supporters of Muslim Brotherhood celebrate

>>> overseas tonight decidedly mixed emotions in egypt after this weekend's news that mohamed morsi of the muslim brotherhood was officially declared the winner of that country's first democratic presidential election. this means big changes in egypt and beyond especially in that region. our chief foreign correspondent richard engel joins us again tonight from tar hrir square. people are just coming to grips with how momentous this really is.

>> reporter: certainly big changes could be ahead. supporters of the muslim brotherhood mohamed morsi are still here in the square celebrating, playing music, hoping this will be the start of a new, islamic state in the middle east . what an incredible change of events. when this revolution began a year and a half ago, in this square, mohamed morsi was behind bars. today morsi was touring president mubarak 's old office, even sitting down in his old chair testing it out for size. critics say that the rise of the muslim brotherhood to power will be absolutely disastrous for this country, turning egypt certainly anti-israeli and perhaps anti-american as well. brian? all right. all of that will deserve watching over the coming days. richard engel , thanks.

Psychedelic nano-art in oils and ferrofluids

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

Fabian_Oefner_Millefiori_04.jpg(Image: Fabian Oefner)

THIS psychedelic landscape ain't your daddy's watercolours. For one thing, the black lines you see are a ferrofluid, a mixture of oil and nanoscale iron particles that responds to a magnetic field. These fluids are normally used to seal computer hard drives or as a contrast medium in medical imaging, but their weird ways mean they show up in artworks, too.

This one was created by Fabian Oefner, an art photographer based in Switzerland, who often uses scientific phenomena to create his images. Oefner placed a few drops of ferrofluid on a white plate of glass and positioned a round magnet underneath to gather the liquid into a circle, forming bizarre three-dimensional structures on the surface. He then used a small syringe to add different shades of watercolours to the ferrofluid, disrupting the magnetic link between the iron particles. Adding just the right amount of watercolour left the attraction between the particles strong enough to create the cell-like pools of colour seen, whereas adding more caused it to fully mix with the ferrofluid, bursting the structure, as has happened on the right-hand side of the image.

Previous ferrofluid artworks include Morpho Towers by Japanese artist Sachiko Kodama, in which spiked sculptures drenched in the magnetic liquid appear to pulsate like an alien artefact, and the video for the single Watercolour by Australian band Pendulum, which features ferrofluids dancing to the music. Groovy.
